Amateur Radio

Had a mate who was heavily into it back in the eighties/nineties,not sure if he still does it (have lost touch nowadays)

My radio skills got no further than the heady heights of illegal CB radio when it hit the shores around 1980
Lost it's appeal somewhat when it was later legalised

I was a very keen enthusiast a few years ago, don't have any kit these days.

Callsigns G6URJ & G0WSJ.

I go through phases of losing interest and selling up then regretting it, :) have been very tempted to get rid of my IC-756PRO II and get a D300S, oh the temptation

G0JPT formerly G8WPJ

Long since gone silent key, lost interest when I was getting too many visits from the DTI because of idiot neighbours running 27mhz high band through firesticks attached to plastic gutters. Like yeh thats gonna act as a ground plane.

I used to run a Trio TS530Sp with matching ATU into a 26ft tall trap vertical, with 100 sq feet of heavy chicken wire burried in the lawn as a ground plane.
I listen to 2m on a scanner very occasionaly, its just like cb now :(

Hi Chris

Thats why I never use 2m, havnt used it in more years than I can remember, never really used it much anyway, 10m/6m for me with the odd foray onto the lower bands when 10 and 6 are dead (which is often) came from CB over 30 years ago and still often listen on 27mhz, those were the days indeed :)

I had a keen interest in it, (still do :D) but never did any of the exams, the closest I got to it was a CB radio, which I still have and use.
It just needs setting up again.

I have a Harrier CB HQ homebase 40 CH converted for 80CH, UK and Mid band, powered mic and a 1/2 wave Thunderpole (sliver rod) with ground planes

G6TKB here not been on much since mobile phones became a more reliable form of communication in the car...

I passed the exams back in 1987 but never got round to applying for a licence.

Steve.

If you still have your paperwork you can still apply. You'd get full hf access too now the requirement for a morse test has been dropped

Unfortunately I don't have the certificates any more. City and Guilds no longer have the rercords.

I tried to get copies a few years ago,

G8KTE seems a long time ago now! Lost interest over the years as there are few radios you can fix now. Can you imagine a single channel 70cms transciever nearly two foot square. It was fun getting it working and a sense of achievement.

I have one of my grandfather's single valve transmitters. I wanted his multi band receiver which he built with army surplus parts just after WWII but unfortunately, he dismantled it a few years before he died.

I still have the chassis and a few other parts but I don't think I have enough to put it back together.

the 11 m is wide open well it has been on and off for the last few weeks so im told i used the cb from 1979 and made many a dx contact around the world i have owned many ham radios over the years i think the pc chat rooms skype etc etc has had a big hit on the cb and ham radio side

Same as me, cruising round talking ***** thinking it was cool

Clandestine meet ups in pubs

I had a mate who was paranoid about getting caught, CB on a slide mount, mag mount aerial , careful about where he transmitted from

He used to sit on a country lane late at night

Another mate converted a blue flashing disco light to 12v , somebody else got him talking then they came round the corner with the light stuck on top of the car

He said ****, **** then silence

As he sped off thinking MI5 had tracked him down he pulled the CB out , threw it out of the window and ripped the aerial off the roof by the wire

When they eventually caught him and explained they went back to find the radio in a ditch full of water
