Anyone else got sudden increased battery drain on an iPhone? Mine has gone from being 3 days use easily to being flat in 36 hours which is completely useless. It's a year old iPhone 11. Fitbit app seemed to be the cause but even after turning that off it's still draining massively for no actual use. 20% lost over night is rubbish performance. Background app updating is turned off most things. Notifications are off unless essential so not many of those.

I have similar although my iPhone 11 is coming up to 3 years old and the battery health is at 87%.

My other thought is that it is ios16 shenanigans. If that is worse on battery you make a previous release that is even worse than that so when you update to 16 it's not as awful.

Cynical but probably close to the truth.

Just found a good article about battery life. I did notice there's a raise to wake setting. Sure I turned that off before as it means when it moves it wakes up. Turned that off. If you walk around with the phone then it keeps more awake. Trip in the car will probably also keep it more awake than it should be too. Shouldn't affect over night behaviour but I suppose it could be over sensitive or it takes more battery to continually monitor for movement.

I was hoping for a better upgrade on the Watch SE, e.g. always-on display. The speed increase doesn't make enough of a difference as the original SE is fast enough. So the only feature that appeals to me is crash detection. Is it worth a trade-in of "up to £95" on a watch that cost something like £247 just to get a watch that costs "starting at £295" (actually £299 for the 44mm in Midnight colour to match my current watch)? It's not a very appealing deal.

The improvements to the iPhone's camera system do appeal to me, though. A 48MP sensor on the main camera which can be treated as 12MP of "quad-pixels" giving a new 2x optical/digital zoom with much better resolution than the 2x zoom/crop of the iPhone 13. Autofocus on the front-facing camera is far less useful for me, but I can see the appeal to photographers that do selfies, or videographers that shoot in dual front/backcamera mode. Most of the general public won't care about autofocus, I would guess.

But again, doing the calculations on the trade-in price of the 13 Pro Max against the cost of an iPhone 14 equivalent makes it not really worth the bother, though I suppose I could just win the Lottery.

Given how little I've used the 13 Pro Max over the last 9 months I've had it, plus the fact that my preferred combination is the 67mm equivalent lens in Portrait mode, I think I'll pass on the 14. Anyone else tempted, or definitely going for it?

One thing I might applaud Apple for is allowing us to shoot Cinema mode in 24fps, the industry standard (in the UK). But it should have been 24fps from the start, IMO.

I shall definitely be going for an "iPhone 14 Pro Max" Garry, as you well know at the moment I'm using a "12 Pro Max" so it'll be a bigger upgrade than your "13 Pro Max" And having been impressed with the quality that you and others get from a 13 series
I've been waiting for the 14 series to be announced.

I must admit I was kinda hoping that the new 14 Pro Max would have a periscope lens and a 2TB memory, but sadly not this time around. As my snapping is predominately street stuff (as is yours) I can see the new iPhone fitting the bill very nicely especially as it has the ability to shoot at 48mm (equivalent FL) still with very good quality will suit me just fine as this without a doubt is my favorite working FL. With a 77mm (equivalent FL) telephoto as well I should be able to squeeze about the equivalent 100mm FL during PP out of it without too much loss of quality giving me a working range from 13mm to 100mm (equivalent FL). As a street photographer I couldn't really ask for more and I can see the new iPhone possibly making my RX cameras redundant with regards to my street snapping.

I shall still keep my 12 Pro Max as I've only had it a little over a year and I enjoy using it very much and it would always be a very good back up.

As for an Apple watch, It's something I've been considering for sometime but never got around to getting one. At this moment I know very little about them but I'll certainly be looking into the possibility of getting one. I wouldn't need the new ultra but maybe one of the others might just suit me very nicely.

It was good to watch, I'm still on an iPhone X over here. I can't think I'll upgrade yet, but I'm intrigued to know how well IOS 16 will run on my X. I'm still on 14 for fear of it causing any bugs or things like that, so hopefully someone else may upgrade first and can relay back.....

TBF, my phone spends 99% of the time sat on my desk. The rest of the time it's in my bag and I'm in my chair so it doesn't really move around that much. I suspect in my case, it's old age (the phone and me ).

The 14 Pro Max seems to have very similar camera hardware to my Pixel 6 in terms of sensor size, resolution and in taking pixel-binned 12MP photos. I'm routinely amazed at how good the photos are from my phone so I'm sure you'll be very pleased with the results from the 14 Pro

Thank you Richard, I hope so.

Currently have an iPhone 11, and my contract allows a free upgrade in a couple of Months time, so think I may go for the 14 Pro Max. Seems like a decent upgrade from the 11.

I'm surprised that there wasn't much discussion on the focal length changing from 35mm equivalent to 24mm equivalent.

All UK Apple Stores will be shut next Monday. What the (US) author of the article overlooks, as do some of the people in the Comments, is that it will be a Bank Holiday. Lots of places will be shut next Monday. As everyone who had a dental appointment, an MOT, or various other got-to-be-rescheduled appointment knows.

One of the comments on Macrumours about the Bank Holiday closures “It's just all very North Korean.”

I’m fairly inured to idiotic comments on the Web but ….

Is that normal I've only had an iPad since April. Looking forward to trying out stage manager.
In the past iPadOS has almost always update with iOS but I think iPadOS 16 is a more major update than usual.

I've just been offered iPadOS 15.7 and it's installing now. It will be interesting to see if I'm offered 16.0 immediately afterwards. It's usually available from 6pm on release day.

EDIT: I've just found that Safari 16 and MacOS Monterey 12.6 are ready for installation, too.

Problem solved, I needed to remove the beta profile that I had installed to give IOS 16 BETA a trial run a month ago. It had some issues so I went back to IOS15.
Anyway, I am now updating to the IOS16 full release.

I remember reading that, with iOS16, you can change the font for the clock on the lock screen, but I can't see where to do that. Anybody know?

On the Lock Screen do a long press. Then hit customise. Then touch the clock. You’ll then see the options.

Press and hold on the lock screen, it will reduce in size and you can scroll to add [+] another screen and edit it.
