all nikon F mount cameras .. any Nikon with a D prefix

Or a 50 1.8 AF D lens is very small if you don't mind a bit of extra length. They are going for about £50 in the January sales (LCE).

Good shout. The recessed front optic means you can get away without a hood.

Yep!

When I'm not putting Tamron AD2 lenses on my D600, it wears a Tamron 28~300mm. On such occasions, I drop the 50/1.8 in my pocket, in case I want to be a bit less obvious or gain a couple of extra stops. I don't use it often but when I do, it does what I want.

Hey Nikon folk, a little advice if you don’t mind..(?)
I fancy dipping my toe into a bit of wildlife photography……I’ve no great experience if I’m honest.

Currently using a D700 and my longest lens length is a mere Nikkor 300mm f/4, I don’t own a teleconverter as I’m not sure which is best to go for…?

Would I benefit from using likes of a D7100 body with the cropped sensor for longer lens throw……..or maybe aim for a D3 body…?

Not sure if DX or a FX body would be appropriate for wildlife captures..?

Any advice most welcome…!

Make sure the focus point can handle the f stop when converted with an extension tube etc

If you have a D700 and are keeping it, get the D7100. You get about twice the range/resolution in good light. The 7200 has better ISO performance so that would be even better if you can afford the extra money. Particularly for birds where they need high shutter speeds.

Your 700 with a battery grip is about the same as a D3 so you'll only get a better shutter speed and maybe slightly better focus with a D3. The D3S is a lot better in the dark but, like a D700, it doesn't crop down a well so you really needs expensive longer lenses.

Whatever you have will do the job, if you want it to.

In the 1960s, I knew a bloke whose only equipment was a folding Kodak Retina camera, a tripod and an insanely long pneumatic release. He would toddle off into the country, first thing in the morning, and come back with an exposed cassette of Kodak Plus X. Some of his 20x16 prints were really good and his subjects ranged from birds to badgers.

In general, it's not the camera in front of the guy but the guy behind the camera.

Hi, here in the middle of Germany, this is the typical colour. Further South, they are a little darker.

Nikon D3100 35mm prime.
Putting this up here tonight, very happy since this photograph was awarded a highly commended in a club comp.
I was delighted since I have worked at this over the last year.
My trusty D3100 and I.

Here is another photograph from my club comps, this one got me a commended, so again amazed about that, this my second season and the first season I did not enter any photographs, I just watched and tried to learn.
Needless to say I am encouraged by this results.
Still they were taken with the D3100 and a fixed prime 35mm lens.

Nice set, I particularly like the angle of flight and the detailed feathers in No. 2
