Alamy seminar Alan Capel head of content

Ok the Alamy seminar I attended a week or so ago was fairly interesting and I shall try to put down what I considered the most relevant points from it.
Alamy upload… this has been tested and tested and they are now in the process of “rolling it out” to photographers, 150 chosen photographers are currently trying the system. This ability will slowly be given to more photographers assuming no major breaks in the system and Alamy hope to have the system available to all within 6 months.

Leave space around images for text, most of the images sold are for advertising and text etc will be added to the image , Shoot secondary images and subjects, update your current images with more up to date shots of the same scene, buildings and skylines change, Get a good volume of images, Aim for the highest quality you can

Alamy Rank,
This is part of their ongoing research into getting the right picture in front of buyers,
Essentialy whos photos show up 1st, This is determined by many different factors and everybody starts off even in the middle. As pictures are bought that photographers name will be given a bonus, if a photographers picture is clicked on (but not bought) they will be given a smller bonus. This is the basics of alamy rank. It is much more complicated than that and if you go to the Alamy site Stock photography and royalty free images and photos from Alamy there are lots of links etc to new information on this subject. You can split your images up between pseudonyms so that maybe some poorer images aren’t dragging your main images down.

One of the biggest changes that they have made recently is the required file types, These have changed from 48mb tiffs to Jpgs. On the alamy site there are also now blog entries and a forum soon to start up.

Well I hope that has informed a few of you about how things are moving at Alamy, any questions pm me or ask in this thread.
Cheers Gary

good info gary, nice one

You can send photographs of pretty much anything you like, as for the inside of cathedrals etc you would have to check with the individual place but I do not see why not.

Initially you have to send in 10 images which have to pass Alamy quality control. They view the images at full size ( 50mb) and they'll reject any images not up to standard and that includes minor dust blemishes. They do no retouching at all so make sure your stuff is bang on. If they reject one, they'll reject the lot in this initial submission.

After that you can send as many images as you like, and they're put straight up for sale and are only subject to occasional random checks.

As Gary says you can send pics of anything you like, Alamy aren't really concerned with the content only the technical merit. Obviously they don't want to see a string of virtually identical shots, but other than that the content is your business.

It's very easy to look on Alamy and see lots of mediocre stuff but it all meets the technical criteria. Whether it sells is another matter of course.

only thing to watch, Alamy may not be bothered where the images come from, but any Images taken at a Zoo and being sold, without the zoos permission, are infringing their copyright, it usually states this clearly on the ticket "photso for commercial use require permission" etc !

Good point Ian. If you have a look at Alamy home pages there's lots of advice on copyright and on what shots are likely to require permission or model release forms. Alamy trust you to tick the right boxes on whether permission or model release forms are required or available, so if people buy your images and then run into difficulties you're not going to be a popular bunny!

Ah I wondered if zoo's maybe didn't allow you to use the pics. I'll do a hunt.

Is there an Alamy forum for questions? I seem to have loads and everytime I see a pic I get more, and can't find many good answers in their normal website.

For example- do you need a model release for someone that cannot be identified eg someone hanging from a rescue helicopter, or a parachutist in shaddow?

Thanks
