advice on DOF please (Fuji HS10)

Alternatively you can plug a remote receiver into the USB port. I am fairly sure you can anyway...

One of the downsides to the HS10 is no remote release compatability.

The HS20 on the other hand will take a remote release, as well as an ETTL compatible flashgun. With the increase in Pixels, a larger sensor, a better positioned Hot shoe (doesn't get in the way of your fingers when zooming), it looks like being a big improvement on a very good camera....

thank you laurie for the compliment.I am seeing quite a bit of improvement since last year but it is frustrating sometimes not knowing why some images are better than others.
I can't get close enough to the camera and high enough to see through the EVF so even a tapletop tripod is no help regretably for the bathroom. I'll have to focus my efforts on getting closer or bringing the birds closer to me in the garden.
Thank you for the settings advice. i'll up the iso to 400 (I'm mostly using A mode now)

I have booked a weeks holiday at Gigrin farm this summer and can't wait to try my luck at the Kites and other bop
I can see already that eventually I shall need to move to a good DSLR and a big expensive lens if my interest stays as keen as it is now. I'd better start saving lol.

Thank you everyone for all your helpful advice and spending so much time today trying to help. i really do appreciate it . For those that scoffed at my bridge camera .... well we all have to start somewhere and this was the best I could afford for a fledgling hobby.
Apologies if I was a bit grumpy with some of you. i'm sure that you meant well.;)

Do you not use live view through the flippy out screen instead of the EVF?

no i don't tend to use the screen much at all. i've turned off the auto evf/lcd switch as well. I have difficulty seeing clearly with it in most lights.
I do tend to use it for macro though . Its great for getting impossible shots where you cannot get your eye to the evf.

Do you have an HS10 ? I see you have a S9500 great camera . i nearly bought a S9500. My first camera was a Fuji 2800 then i upgraded to an S5000 and a S5600 which I still have as a backup when i don't want to risk damaging the HS10.

Can you put some super glue on the feeder perch? This will enable you to get much closer to the birds....

Ok, so when your shooting your bird shots, and can't see through the EVF, use the LCD. Flip the screen out (I assume it double hinges like my S9600) so when you hold the camera above you head, you can see the lcd. That way when you shove it out the window, you can see what your taking!!!

And then, when you mount it on a tripod out the window, you can do that as well. Then get yourself a cable release, one of the old fashioned ones. THey come up used on here, or a couple of pounds online new.

THen you can set the camera up on the tripod, see through the LCD and then trigger the shutter using the cable whilst stood in the room nice and comfy.

Photography is an art, but you don;t always have to suffer for it!!

sounds good in theory but unfortunately there are three people in my house using the bathroom and one is my 90 year old Dad who has dementia plus 2x sucidal cats that launch themselves at any open window.

I measured the distance to the feed area today and found to my surprise it is 28 feet from the kitchen window and approx 31 feet from bathroom so its really too far for the HS10 unless I use a tele converter . I need to think about getting closer.

Can you put some super glue on the feeder perch? This will enable you to get much closer to the birds....

Like your thinking DDJ
