Hi Guys,

As a newbie here and to photography in general Im looking for a bit of advice on my limited kit for an adventure trip across the arctic and Northern Norway.

My Equipment - Very limited and cheap... Canon 400D and a few various f/3.5-4.5 zoom lenses, tripod etcetc.

Im particularly interested and wanting advice on lenses and perhaps even settings I could use to photograph the Northern Lights. Im going in February but would love some advice on a few pieces of equipment in particular...

Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM
-and the-
Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM

Basically (as Im told) Im looking for a wide lens, but more importantly something that performs in low light for no more than £350-£400 (very tops)

Im lucky in that Im about to go out with professional Guide Kjetil Skogli (recently seen on Joanna Lumleys Northern Lights Doco) from Tromso - so I want to make the most of it!!

Thanks in Advance Guys!

ON your 400D 28mm and 30mm are not really that wide. Set one of your current lenses to that focal length and see if the field of view is wide enough.

Are you planning on taking a tripod? If so this kind of negates the need for a fast prime a bit as you will more than likely want to have the camer aon a tripod to photography the lights well.

I am also going to Tromso - going out with Kjetil Skogli on 23rd Feb - when r u going on his trip?
Also looking for advice - have a Nikon D40 and 18-200 Nikkon VR lens.
Have been reading up some and advice was to bring a few extra batteries as they die quicker in the cold.( Keep extra batteries in inside pocket)
Also lots of memory but that goes without saying
A Ziploc bag to put camera in when coming in out of the cold - condensation form on bag NOT camera.
Silk lining gloves under thick gloves
Read a fer comments abt Kjetil - apparently he is not quick to hand out snow suits so advised to ask him for them!!!!
Also not overly keen to light a fire but will if pushed!!!! but if the Northern Lights are to be found he will find them.
Just a few bits and pieces that I hope will help you
I am celebrating a big birthday !!!! so is hubby so this is birthday present to ourselves!!!!

if its a trip why not try renting the lens, see lenses for hire around here somewhere :D Might save you money if its not something you would use often else

I read an article somewhere recently about photographing the Nothern Lights and the writer recommended shutter on B with F22 aperture and to use some sort of black lightproof cover to put over the lens during times when the lights faded and remove when they flared up again.
A bit like the technique for capturing multiple lightning strikes.

Only seen NL once here and it was nothing like as spectacular as some of the Norwegian pics I have seen.

great thanks to all!

Killard - Im going on the 9th of Feb with him - I'll let you know how it goes! It got down to Minus 12 in Tromso today! I was in Norway for Christmas and it was regularly -5 to -10 so I have aclimatised so to speak... my camera was fine in the cold too.

Just a thought.
If you are going out and about at night to take pics a handy piece of kit is a LED head torch which leaves both hands free.

Back from my trip - had a brillant time and no worries re trip with Kjetil Skogli - it was perfect - he actually set my camera up and I got some great shots. He is a great fellow - had a wonderful time with him as guide - he has a peugeot people carrier that holds 7 passengers and does chase the lights - we had 3 Austalians and 2 New Zealanders along with ourselves - back in Tromso after 2am - he picked us up at 6.30pm at Radisson SAS.
