Hi, a bit of a random question, but is it possible to export images from Lightroom with a fixed aspect ratio (16:9) even though the images have random aspect ratios?

What I'm trying to do is to export images so that they can be shown on widescreen tv's around school (I'm a teacher by the way), but if I just save any images to a memory stick, the TV's automatically stretch them to fill the 16:9 aspect ratio, which appears to be really unpopular with some Year 11 girls when shot in portrait format and stretched to look wider than they are tall!

The only way I've managed to get around the issue so far is to open a MS Publisher document to the 16:9 ratio, individually paste images onto the page and then export each individual page as a jpeg, thus resulting in an image with a white background at 16:9 with the original image in the centre at the correct proportions. A long winded and ham fisted operation to say the least!!

So, a simple export from Lightroom would be fantastic!

Thanks
Aled

Unfortunately, I don't have the answer for you, but your comment about the year 11 girls did make me chuckle! :)

I think it is a function of of the tv. You should be able to set the tv controls to show the image at its native ratio.

I've just worked it out!!! Yes!!!

I created a slideshow in Lightroom and then exported the slideshow as jpegs (Ctrl+Shift+J), the save window allows you to choose the size it's exported as.

I thought that too, but I've been through the menus and couldn't find a thing. The system is very basic, so there's almost nothing to change.

Thanks anyway

I don't want to appear doom laden, but I'm not convinced you've solved the problem as I think the tv will still stretch the image to fit.

I hope not, the exported slideshow jpegs have the border in place at 1600x900 and the images themselves are as shot.

I've just checked with a 1600x200 export to see what would happen, and the original image albeit very small, still retains it's aspect ratio despite being in a very wide grey strip.

So the 1600x900 jpeg should work. It's looking hopefull!
