A sad rant

How do you work out f2.8 to f2 is four stops ?

Actually, it is five stops, I forgot that you had used ISO 200 film and not 400.

f/2.8 to f/2 gets you one additional stop and then replacing your ISO 200 film with Portra 400 pushed to 3200 gets you another four from what you had originally.

Anyway as my son and partner are digital guys they would laugh at grainy colour shots of their daughter (my grandaughter) ;) But they all like my flash shots in restaurants etc with Reala 100 ISO.

Brian, if you want to use film and you don't want to upset the performers and the rest of the audience, then this is your best option. If you want to try to use a flash, go ahead, but you can't complain if others complain, as you've been warned ahead of time.

I'm almost as stubborn as you are and I typically use colour film for everything, so when light is at a premium, I have to push. It's not ideal, but it does work when you have no other viable options.

I don't push to 3200 very often, but here are a few examples of Portra pushed three stops, which shows that it is at least useable:

I typed out quite a long rebuttal here but on reading it through, I deleted it as even if you did deign to read it, you'd ignore all the points I'd made and pick one tiny statement to make a comparison with Stalinism or the plight of the pied wagtail or the ceaseless rise of big chain coffee shops in the high streets of suburbia.

Very good RJ and it looks like pushing Portra gives VG results..... but when I get my shots back I'll post one and you will see what I was up against and IMO only flash would have solved the problem if the light was so poor. But interestingly I was looking at digi guys with notebooks and cameras etc and they were getting bright images on their screen...and I was looking thru' my dull viewfinder with a 135mm f2.8 lens as my 50mm f1.4 lens was too wide....maybe I should have used my mobile ;)
H'mm could start a digi ver film war for low light if the digiredoo guys come over here

I give up, you're the single most impossible person to have a discussion with I've ever come across anywhere.

Well we see things differently and that's that....vive la difference ;)

You know what I like about Brian? Whatever you say, however much you have a go, however many times you refute his stance, he just smiles, winks and moves blissfully on... And he wins again. ;):)

i would have used a flash if id had one to get pics of my grand daughter ,,,,,,im with Brian on this one

Wins what exactly?

A box of chocolates and a trip up the river on a horse drawn barge. Whilst all you lot get is a high blood pressure and clumps of pulled out hair.

I respectfully disagree. Posting a contentious opinion and then deliberately antagonising everyone who disagrees before posting a wink and pretending that it's all a game is the debating tactic of a 12-year-old. If you ask me, there are no winners in this thread.

Outrageous ;) mind you if I was in the front row seated, I wouldn't have stood up and fired the flash into my grandaughter's eyes and into to all the other girls behind from about 8ft away, no one seems interested in my post #16. :(
