4 for me. xyxyx translated to an xxxgg and from there, having eliminated most of the usual suspects, I had 2 contenders. xgxgg or ggggg - guess which I tried first!!!

The reason I thought the previous 2 days were tricky (apart from BEEFY not being a “proper” word, as @Cockney said) was that they both had doubled letters plus letter Y. I always feel a bit cheated that two occurrences of the same letter isn’t indicated.

Beefy's been a proper word since 1743 (according to the Online Etymology Dictionary). Tricky, yes but at least it's the current spelling rather than the archaic options still used by the Americans! The doubled letters make things a bit trickier but that's part of the fun IMO.

Oh, I agree about that but like Brian I think it has a slangy feel, maybe because it isn’t used in relation to ”beef” — like ”porky“ too! Beef and Pork have only been adopted as English words since 1066, bloody Normans
