I've just hired one for a few days from Stewart at lensesforhire and I am in luuuurve already. :) It feels very nice on the D3 the dof is crazy and I'm looking forward to putting it through its paces this weekend, just taken a quickie and waiting for the kids to come home from school. :D

Dammit Colin,i`ve spent enough...............:bat:

Now you know why its called the "cream machine" the bokeh is to die for.

Mart.

Yep, tis very nice - have one on my D700, and love the results and the feel of it as well; it's heavy and solid.

Colin, you've just gone down in my respect list... I thought you'd have one already...

Welcome to the club, because you'll be buying one now ;)

   to all of you!

I've got the f/1.8 but wanted to try this in order to scratch the itch. I didn't think there would be that much difference but it has backfired as I have now got serious lust and as marvin said I can see why it is called the cream machine.

A few more shots trying the crazy dof....

Itch scratched now get your credit card out :D

How about a few of the exact same subject to show the difference between the f1.4 & f1.8 ???

That could be interesting :)

DD

Indeed it would, as it's not the DOF that is the big difference. the Boke is just beautiful on the 1.4. And there's something special about the colour and contrast too. If all my lenses had the colour and contrast of the 1.4 I'd shoot jpg not RAW.

That looks an amazing piece of kit Colin, you thinking of buying one now you have used it:lol:

Very nice. Just like my LensBaby ;) Does it do sharp photos as well?

Only kiding guys :D lovely lens, but why are you getting all unnecessary about it?

they really are something aren't they :) time for that credit card :)

Hugh

you don't want one of them half of each photo is out of focus :bonk:

just tring to help :p, that really is sweet DoF

I hired the 35mm f.14 (Canon) from Stewart for a winter wedding and oh my! The creams and green and blues................it had to be prized from my mitts.

One day.........(cuts up credit card)

Not that big:

Not sure you entirely got the joke m8 :suspect:

AliB miss-typed an f1.4 as an f0.14 - the decimal point was in the wrong place

Apologies if indeed you spotted (and ignored ) that

Ask and ye shall receive!

This is by no means a definitive or controlled test but a couple of quick shots taken in my sons room. Both shots were manually focused on the 'W' in the word NEW next to the Lynx logo. Both were wide open at their respective apertures and both were processed identically. The first thing that strikes me is how much sharper the 1.4 is over the 1.8 however when I zoom in close there is a touch of purple fringing around the white Lynx letters on the 1.4, the colours also appear richer with the wider lens although it is probably difficult to see at this size.

Totally agree. After the thread that talked about Audrey Wouland (can't remember where the thread was now) it has only fueled my desire for this lens.

Would love to see some similar shots to Wouland's with both the f/1.4 and f/1.8 close to wide open (say 1/3 of a stop down from wide)

Me bad typist!

DD, pedant :)
(he knows I love him really lol)

not much difference to me
the colours seem better on the f1.8 shot though, but that might be something else

smooooooth lens though

I really must get out the primes again!

Looks to me like the f1.8 needs a tad more sharpening too - but as a happy f1.8 user, and considering the price of an upgrade presently, I'm happy with what I've got for now and unless presented with shots from both lenses at the same time (with adequate processing for each) I know a client is never going to know the difference

So yes - if I fall over a ton of cash - then no doubt I'd upgrade everything, for now though - I'm fine

Thanks for doing that Colin, controlled as such isn't that appropriate really, what we needed was a field experiment - and this is fine

However, I'd be concerned about...

a) why you ventured into your son's room to shoot this, and
b) why he's using an apparently woman swooning guaranteed product

How old is he

:D

With my legal background - pedant is a compliment :D

Much better than that other legal term 'Slack-arse' - meaning - 'Solicitor'

Oh dear me. Is this what's it's really all about?

Each to their own fellas, but until somebody can show me a worthwhile photo, taken at f/1.2 or 1.4 or whatever, and hand on heart say that it wouldn't be as good or even couldn't be done with anything more modest, then I will stick with my sensible zooms :D

Only joking of course, but you know where I'm coming from...

Certainly do

I think / hope :suspect:

In which case, :agree: too

Would like to see outside portrait shots with specular highlights trees, greenary and the like in the BG, I think it's there that say the 50mm f/1.8 is at its weakest and where the 85mm f/1.4 may show-off better than the indoor shots.

Obviously I'm hoping not really as <£300 is a better prospect than >£800 for me :suspect:

Indeed.

Also, I think for the test to have any worth there need to be comparison shots taken at the same aperture throughout the range. I would expect an expensive lens like the 1.4 to perform better at it's widest aperture than the cheaper 1.8, but it's difference bewteen the two at f:2.8, f:4, f:5.6, f:8 and f:11 which would be more useful to see. Afterall, these are the apertures that the majority of shots will be taken at.

not sure there - why would you buy an f1.4 lens to use it at f8-f16?
