7D - Your Thoughts?

All,

Thanks for the advice and great info in all the posts above. As someone else has pointed out as well as in this thread why not get the 5dII for the low noise + video plus point and get the 1D3? This is an idea i had already thought of and would actually be a great setup to have however what are the going prices on 5dII with grip at the moment, im guessing another £700 on top of my current 5d.

I would like the 1d 3 because it is a bit bigger and you dont need to get a grip for it, does all the things i would like, except the video, the video itself doesnt play a large factor in my question, it was a nice to have. I think it would go well in weddings however i know full well that this would only be through my own choice to add video to the shoot, the client certainly wouldnt expect it.

I've used my 7D for weddings, cracking results. Only issue as you might expect is the group shots, crop sensor not always a useful thing :D I can post some examples if you wish.

I also use if for Motorsport, which along with wildlife, is what the beast is designed to do  truly amazing!

I cannot comment on the comparison to the 1 series as I havent played with them :'(

Dave, i would very much appreciate some examples if you have some. i have the 5d at the moment so i already own FF  however i need something with some speed and the added bonus of video is just an extra

I'm sorry, I guess it's based on my experience of it.

I can hold the 5D2, gripped with a 70-200 IS aloft for ten minutes and if I'm covering an event 2 hours.

I wouldn't even consider the 7d / 5D2 / 1D4 for video if it was a professional choice. A Sony HDV pro camera would be my choice instead, for a wedding.

And manual focus using live-view on the rear screen and focus using the lens focus ring :notworthy: I'd like to see how you hold your camera and some results because i struggle with my griped 5d2 70-200 if its not on a tripod for video.

Video is all about lots of short clips edited together. Not many want to watch the same thing ,20 seconds is a very long time in video, thats when it gets boring.
So the bits out of focus or shaky are cut out

OK theres still over a K's worth of extra kit - and the OP's talking of using it at weddings for stills / video, which if you want to sell the video is probably unrealistic without extra kit which will make a quick switch from stills to video difficult.

Watch this

the only extra kit - a zacuto z finder, are you saying this isnt good enough quality to sell? extra cost £250.

video is a pain on a DSLR without extra kit

kit makes it better thats true, but you can't say its mandatory, I've been shooting video for many months with my 7d and I'd never go back to a camcorder. The limitations on the video I have shot are my artistic skills, not my equipment.

It's really not that hard. at least I don't find it hard. I use something like this:

but a lot less posh, cost me about a tenner, then get yourself a zacuto z finder for the manual focus. Total extra cost £260 ish. Totally doable and people are doing it right now.

Ahh. thats OK then.........we'll assume the cut out bits ar'nt important.

No i'm saying

trying to focus using the rear screen and manually focusing without introducing any shake or blur is a pain, without using ancillary kit.

Not with IS and a Rode Shotgun Mic it isn't.

for you maybe but others can achieve it, also you dont need to spend thousands of pounds to get some ancillary kit to improve things

OK - i will practice focusing using my viewfinder in bright sunlight while holding the camera at arms length and reaching around to the front on the lens and adjusting focus while tracking a moving object on a typical blustery Summers day.

Ah so now we need a lens with IS, Rhode shotgun mike, Z-finder, bracket to hold the camera editing software to edit the no-blurry out of focus footage we manage to take.....................

Rather than fight the elements you could always change position.

or buy a z finder and make life easier! £250!

i've been tempted for the last couple of months with the z-finder pro as this one has a diopter adjustment built in but its about £360 , to use with my mp-e but i also need a new PTT for my boat and its about £600 ...........

im tempted myself! to, I wear glasses as well but i dunno how the eyepiece would fit with me without a diopter.
