I need a spare battery for my 7D which I have just bought but I'm not sure which one to buy. Ebay sellers talk about 'fully decoded' ones, what's all that about please?

Don’t do it Stu, you have a high end and very expensive piece of kit that you are now considering loading in a cheap and nasty ebay battery into which you have no idea what the little far eastern mfr has put by way of cells. Its reasonable to assume they will be the cheapest and therefore most likely to leak.

Get to your local photo dealer and if not a Canon unit at least go for something like Memorex or Energiser.

I have used 7dayshop for years and they are great. Amazing prices! I looked for some on here the other day but for some reason they didn't show up. Will order one today

One thing to watch out for with 7day is that they bulk buy (to help them sell cheap) so if the stock level shows on order or back order it can take months before they get enough orders for them to then order in a big bulk lot. As long as you keep that in mind 7dayshop is ace.

Just ordered two. Will let you know how they are!

 As long as they show battery left, I'll order one or two too...

Can anyone actually find an example where a 3rd part battry had leaked.

Because a google search has brough up nothing - yet folk still claim it might happen...

Personally I have used 3rd party batteries for years - and while some may fail to hold charge quicker I've never had a real problem. Since I can buy 5 of those 7 day shop batteries for the price of a single Canon branded one I know am not overly concerned about the fact they may last less time.

FWIW I've had two batteries fail on me in 7 years. One canon, one 3rd party.

I have used 3rd party batteries in compacts, my 450D and my 7D. they last as long, the quality appears to be as good as any manufacturers batteries I have used.

I also haven't seen anything about a leak either...

Going to order one of those 7 day shop ones I think...

The batteries for the 1DIII and 1DIV from the 7Dayshop were terrible. I had to return them all (tried 4 different ones from 2 batches) and they could not hold a charge reliably.

On the other hand the ones for the 1D and 1DII were great and so were the ones for the 40D and 50D so it varies.

They're Lithium aren't they? I don't know how reliable this source is, but http://www.mpoweruk.com/lithiumS.htm claims ...

"No liquid electrolyte means they are immune from leaking."

So leaky third party batteries is another made up internet "fact" ;)

Over a similar timeframe, I've had one failure ... a Canon original. All 5 of my 3rd party batteries and another Canon are still going strong.

brandwhores trying to justify their expenditure on £50 batteries ;)

absolutely let them waste their money, it's fine by me I'll stick to the ebay ones and save afortune!

grabbed a spare for 5d from 7dayshp and it failed v quickly. no problem refund though.

Does the 7dayshop one charge with the Canon charger?

I have used their AA batteries with their V8 charger & they work great.

Stew.

Mine should turn up next week hopefully so I will let you know.

Normally if they don't they say you need their own charger.

Thanks Russell that would be great.

I got another type of battery to fit the 7D (off ebay I think) & they came with their own charger, they work well but the camera doesn't tell you how much charge is left in them, when you first put them back it always says 'cannot communicate with this battery do you want to use'? which is a bit unnerving. Having said that I've never had the slightest problem with them (touch wood) & they've never run out in one session but I always charge them again after each session no matter how many shots I've taken to be on the safe side.
It will be nice to have some the camera can fully read. :)

Received my 7DayShop battery for the 7D today, charges in the Canon charger and gives the same battery info in the camera as the Canon LP-E6, £10.99 inc P/P a 30 day money back and a 12 month guarantee.

Mine came today and works fine in the 7D and displays the power left. Also charges in the Canon charger. Order away folks!

My 7dayshop one arrived today as well, charged up on the Canon charger and showing 100% just need to take some pics now. At least I won't have to fret about not having a spare battery.

I had several batteries from 7dayshop and they have all worked great and are still going strong after three years or so. The only battery I have had failed was a Canon one!!!!
I shall certainly be getting one of the 7dayshop ones for my 7D.

Ordered on 27th, arrived today.

Yes, they work, but not 100%. The battery displays power left and recharge performance on screen, but doesn't allow you to register the battery to enable battery management. At a guess because it has either a fixed or no 8 digit code. Having said that, if you're after a spare battery that just indicates charge whilst in the camera, this appears (at first glance) to be a pretty good bargain!

The OEM ones from HK are about £20 but allow you to do everything the origional one does. I can only presume now that they where made in the same factory as genuine ones.
If it's only a metter that you can't register them but they do everything else including charge in the origional charger I wouldn't worry.
Still cheaper than the Canon one :D
