7D Right For Me?

Hello,

So I just got my shiny new 7D in the post, I've not had a chance to even turn it on yet (waiting patiently, work is busy etc).

I spent around £800 on it (import) which was a stretch for me. This is an upgrade from a well used 400D I've had since release.

Obviously this post is a bit premature, given I haven't had a play with the camera yet, but, logging on to Gumtree this evening I noticed that I could get my hands on great condition (used) 5D MK IIs for around the £900 mark.

I've read everything going on 7D vs 5DII and I know its been pretty much exhausted. My reasons for going for the 7D were primarily: it's newer (the 'outdated AF' label on the 5D puts me off somewhat, as well as there now being the mark 3, and I have read about the soon to be release firmware update which also sounds promising). My worry is most of the positives for a 7D seem to be in the sports and wildlife realm, neither of which really interest me. I'm more interested in 'street' type photography, mainly in close-ish range - nothing zoomy!

So I'm wondering if I have got the right camera, it certainly looks and feels very modern and a massive step up from the 400D, but am I going to be left wishing I'd gone for a 5DII?

:bonk:

Oh, I currently have the 24-105L and 50mm 1.4.

Thanks in advance :)

new firmware is already released (yesterday or day before)

only you can decide and based on already buying the 7d i guess you have (even if only sub-conciously) - go with your gut - the 7d is a great camera

AWSOME camera you wont go wrong and you will be PLEASED with your purchase beive you me

My story is similar. Went from 450d to 7d last December. I too looked at 5d II. The price difference at the time was around the same as it is now, although both were higher prices. I shoot a bit of everything. I suppose you could shoehorn me as a Travel photographer.

I have never regretted upgrading to the 7D. Fantastic camera. The main thing that concerned me was I wanted the smaller sensor because one, it would give me more zoom on my lenses as I find myself as somebody who crops tight in the majoirty of the time. From my 450d I also had a couple of lenses that I would lose. As well as a couple my Dad has.

The various auto focus modes are tremendous, in comparison to the 450d. I have only recently really got to grips with using the auto focus modes in fast moving situations like birds.

I use a 24-70 as my main lens so like your 24-105 you might sometimes find you cant quite get wide enough. But you get the zoom over the 5d.

Get out and enjoy your camera.

Fred they really are two different cameras and I don't think they should be compared.
You've just bought yourself a cracking camera in the 7D so stop worrying about it, get out and enjoy it.

You should have waited for the 6D coming out in a few months :D :D

The grass is always greener...

Some really useful feedback, thank you all :)

It sounds like I should stick to my guns and go and enjoy it.. I guess it's always tough when it represents such a big investment, and, as already pointed out I could end up waiting/wondering for ever and never actually buying the damn thing!

@vaizki 6D does look sweet though!

Thank you!

6D..?? not heard of this
just bought a 7D too, import, £848 with a 3 year warranty and even £11 back from quidco...bargain!
but I'd love full frame...however, the AF and fps are key for me
for street photography? maybe the 5Dii would be better? but neither will improve your photography....only enhance it...to improve...get out there and snap away!

tbh, if you're into candids and people, then the better AF might be a real bonus!

I'm not really one for shooting fast moving objects and my 20D and 5D focus is fast enough for me.

I'd look at it as a choice based on specification, image quality or even APS-C v FF. If you can separate them and see an advantage for yourself in any category that might ease your decision.

Both the 7D and 5DII are better than you. Now thats not me being rude, it's just they are both great cameras. It's like my golf clubs, in the right hands they are far better than i will ever be. Some of my favourite photographs i have ever seen have been taken on some very basic gear. Go out and have some fun

Make the 7D right for you. Use the camera to help you learn more about all aspects of photography. If things go wrong, you can't blame the 7D so look to yourself to not make the same mistake again. You have presented yourself with a great opportunity for improvement so be positive and you will amaze yourself at the work you can produce.

Don't forget to post some shots on here and ask for critique. Good luck.
