75 in a 60......

It's been a very very long time for me to have ended up in court, so I don't know if they still do it. My issue was that the fine gets means tested, I was awarded a huge penalty. Yet the guy before me who was much more extravagant in his speed offence ended up with less than a tenth of my fine.

So if you can avoid it going to court I would really recommend that.

3pts + £60 fine probably (can go up to £1000)
Have a look on pepipoo

Well the letter arrived and I'm happy to say it was indeed 3 points and a £60 fine.

To be fair this has slowed me down, but now that I am driving the speed limit all the time, its really showing me just how many people aren't!

The que of people I get behind me in a 30 zone is really surprising, even though before I would have been one of those people. Guess its just more noticeable from this side!

I'm also getting 0.3 miles more to the gallon.....!

Glad to hear it.
And....breathe..... :-)

Did you know that all things equal when you drive 30mph and have to do an emergency stop and are successful, that if you did that whilst driving 32mph you still have an impact speed of 18mph at the same point. The difference is staggering and mind boggling.

I know the thing about driving 70mph and stopping and if you were doing 100mph you'd be doing 70mph where the 70mph driver stopped/

I didn't think an exta 2mph would add 18mph to the collision speed.

I must admit that I've taken the national speed awareness course marginal speeding stats st face value. The most annoying tiff needle was demonstrating it in a Ford Focus st. Two of my most annoying objects. But that was an eye opener for me.

I like Tiff Needle but hate all fords except Mustangs and GT40/Ford GT

I'd like to see proof of that statistic!

It's not a statistic ;) it's physics.

Physics that assumes car brakes at the same rate as a Ford Anglia did...thinking distance of a whole second to allow looking up from phone is reasonably accurate these days though ;)

No not at all, as I highlighted. All things equal, you drive, same stopping point, same car, same brakes everything the same. Except your speed.

Hence the impact speed is relevant to you.

Automatic braking, my volvo does it...not tested it...yet...
Exactly, both my cars do that as well. But the impact speed would be higher if it braked at the same point. Naturally the system is clever, well mine is and brakes earlier to compensate for it and avoid the collision.

Overall stopping distance from 32 mph is 9 feet longer so therefore impact speed would have to occur at 9 foots worth of stopping time which seems to equate to 13.5 mph not 18. I can't see how they worked it out to 18 mph.

I need to see their working :)

We all know that 99% of statistics are statistically wrong :D ]
(or fabricated, statistically speaking :D )

WTF is Tiff Needle, never heard of him, is he related to Needles in Back to the Future?

By the way, it's likely to be £100 fine + 3 points, not £60 if it's just a FPN (which in all likelihood, it will be).

Errr...the result is in post 43

It was tiff needell in a Ford Focus ST, I'm surprised it wasn't 25mph :p

The thing to remember about speeding is that the speeder tends not to get anywhere fast.
They just think they do!

I'm talking about around town BTW.
The number of times I see drivers racing away from traffic lights to be stopped at the next ones as I coast up behind or beside them.
The same happens on the local roads near me on the West side of Edinburgh.

If you want to get somewhere earlier just leave a few minutes earlier.

The reason to get somewhere earlier, hardly features in the list of excuses. And I can speak from experience that that was never ever the reason for me.

Well I would say that the person obviously feels a need to get to their destination earlier than if they had obeyed the speed limits, so I don't see your problem with the way I worded it.
Unless your just being argumentative?

What are the reasons then?

The law doesn't apply to me.
I'm more important than everyone else.
I don't care about anyone else.
Other people's lives are not important.
I have a fast car.
I'm a better driver than everyone else...

I have no problem with the way you worded it at all. Nor am I argueing against it. What's up with the aggression?

I did however go to a speed awareness course yesterday and there was a whole section allocated to the reasons of speeding. Out of the 24 people in the room one person mentioned their reason was being late. Mine was frustration. A fair few was because they didn't know what the speed limit was.

And nobody mentioned any of your sarcastic sounding reasons.

There are a few poorly sign posted speed limit area's around and about, (although everyone should know the 30 60 & 70, its the in-betweeners that they decide on, for no reason that tend to catch people out, well that and the hidden talivans of course in area's that they "know" people go over the limit in)
But to be fair they have also started, in some area's posting the speed limit, just before the camera.

It is actually very simple. Street lights and it is 30, unless there are repeaters every 4th lamppost or so telling you otherwise. Otherwise it is national speed limit. Which varies as you highlight above between 60 and 70 for cars, depending on whether it is single or dual carriageway.

Apart from the 40's & 50's that used to be 60's in open country side
( or in some cases even duel carriageways)
These are the ones that tend to be poorly signed, with the talivans somewhere,
As they can get you 1 mile away, by the time you have seen them its too late ;)

I wasn't being aggressive :)

I should have put a couple of smilies in :) :) :)

Just curious.

I just don't see the need for speed. It doesn't interest me, not surprising with the cars I have had!

I love speed although I rarely speed on the open road. Speed on water is even more fun in my opinion.

Come driving where I live then 20's plenty as the signs say

More and more around here as well. And London is rapidly turning into one big 20 zone as well.

Those numbers don't seem right to me. I know you only recently did your speed awareness course but is it possible you've got them wrong?
You cannae change the Laws o' Physics...

Oh no, most definitely not. It featured for a fair bit. And the traffic cop explained how marginal speeding and impact speed now play a much higher role than ever before.

I looked on YouTube for the tiff needell movie about marginal speeding in conjunction with the AA but can't find it.

So best is to go speeding, get caught and go on the course :p
