weekly 52 in 2013: Brian of Bozeat : COMPLETE

Hi Brian
I see where you are coming from but thats Big Ben not the houses of parliament. the angle and composition is odd
The random chimneys, stonework, trees and plane are not really adding anything. I think parliament is a good subject for the theme, although a more classic shot of parliament has probably been done a thousand times it would have fitted the theme better.
sorry Brian i just think you are capable of more,
maybe a bit of explanation of what you were trying to achieve and it would make more sense

Hi Brian

I really do envy you getting to go up in one of those !

How was the London walkabout ? Any shots posted ?

ttfn

Well, I am now officially a Pilot under Training, so one day I will be able to offer to take my friends for a flight - but not yet, be patient (about a year with luck) and you might get ago :)

RE London pics Just a FEW ON HERE

It is what it is, ie. a quirky image around the theme of "power". There are several references to power of one sort or another, I'm pleased that you spotted some. Sorry you don't like it though, thanks for commenting, we're still friends :)

Thanks for your comments, I "tweeked" curve a little since the other commented, I was scared Graham might see it and it would set off his OCD! :)

What am I... the horizon police..... :police:

curve works well, nice work keeping the shadows without loosing the highlights - tricky scene to expose for! A shot like that I'd love to see big enough to fill my screen, but it works fine for me.

Power.... I agree you need to go for something diifferent every so often, and this could work, possibly with a few more power references, or a nicer sky... But I like the POV and the wide angleness of it.

It has a hint of a shot a child might take (stay with me), where they don't know or don't feel the need to follow conventional "rules". And sometimes end up with much more interesting shots as a result.

I was out with my eldest the other day, and we both took a picture of the same scene, his with the subject smack in the middle, mine off on a third... he much preferred his.

Thanks Graham, Curve is bigger on flickr but of course it's only 800 pxls on here. :)

RE: Power, thanks for your thoughts, have you ever seen "the sea" by Lowry btw?

HI ya

can I book a seat on your 1st flight as a qualified pilot then :D

Just had a nosey at your London photos......must say , I prefer the other version of your Curve shot....

Power......hmmmmm.....love how Big Ben stands out & the tiny plane in the sky.....but confess to struggling with it a bit....sorry :'(

Well, maybe not the first flight eh? just in case ;)

I had a dozen "curve" shots through the day, but I only like to claim one for my submission, it's kind of one of my "rules". I'm glad you liked something I've done recently! :p

Liking your curve shot very much, well captured.

Hey You :)

Curve re-shoot - Very nice Brian, good positioning for the shot, well lit and very nice curves, good spot mate

Power - Well erm, sorry but i'm not sure either, too much sky, not enough big ben, odd clip of building on the left, tiny plane  are you sure you didn't stay in the pub for most of the day

Can't believe you didn't spot the flag! :D

Curves works well for me. I like that engineering abstract kind of shot anyway, and the composition here pull me down into the shot nicely.

Not keen on power at all... primarily because that's what I had planned to pop down and shoot in my lunch hour tomorrow... Git!:D

Love the curve shot; I'm a sucker for a well composed engineering/architectural shot. I think my only issue with the power shot is the dominance of the white sky; the other elements can't compete with it. The only solution to it - it you see it as a problem - might be unify the other elements by stripping out the colour so they become mono tones against the white; a slight vignette would then pull the eyes more strongly up the tower to the plane.

All crap advice if you're happy with the shot as is :)

Thanks for this, I do appreciate your thoughts, and everyone elses actually. :)

For me the large sky gave it the feeling of being dominated (feeling small) a mouse eye view if you will amongst the "powerful" elements - Chimneys (industry), Union Standard (national, military), Clock tower (parliament), jumbo jet (globalisation) - The trees reminded me of deforestation etc.

I guess a day in the big city just overwhelmed me, I'm back to normal now I can smell the cow **** again.

What an absolute corker Brian, super zig-zags all the way up through the massive foreground. Thought it was a much wider angle than it actually was.

Taken from a balloon?? Or on the shoulders of a really tall mate??

Love it.

Thanks Graham, much appreciated. Yes I took it while flying on Sat eve, in between turns at the controls ;)

Hi,
Very nice Brian, can only agree with Graham nothing else to add  Taken from a balloon I see, the views you get must be fantastic.

The only fault I can find (or can't) is no subject (person, animal, house) alone there.

Cracking sky though

Thanks, I'm kinda hooked now, looking into buying my own!

Thanks, I took it with the thoughts of conveying the mood rather than demonstrating the word. I also took loads of single balloonists which were more obviously "on theme" but I felt this was a better image over all and I only ever put 1 up. ;)

That's just beautiful... That is all!

Thanks! :)

Hi, it doesn't scream solitude, and sometime i feel photographs shouldn't, but as a photograph it has lovely light, texture and subtle shadows.

Cheers.

Brian,

Love the solitude image. Wish i had time to amble around Northamptonshire or fly around in balloons taking great shots :p

Did you use any filters or merge the exposures?
Come on, tell me your secrets to help me learn.

Thanks,
Alan

I think your interpretation of the theme as conveying a mood of solitude is bang on Brian
As a viewer, I can imagine you the photographer looking out over the landscape in solitude from the balloon. In reality, there may have been quite a few people with you  but thats obviously not what it conveys, well to me at least.

Compositionally very good Brian, as mentioned above by Graham, the zig zagging of the lines up through the scene really draws the viewers eye in and through.

Great piece of work Brian, you lucky so&so

Hi Alan, I took several similar shots with different exposures and picked the best, this shot was exposed for the sky just to the right of the sun. I brightened the land up in PP by creating a second [much brighter] exposure derived from the same RAW file and then blended the two.

I would have no time to mess about with filters etc. when flying.

It conveys the mood very well, a sense if you like.

Hi ya Brian

Lovely lovely shot that...your eye gets drawn all the way through the fields to that lovely sky ....well worthy of framing me thinks  Not sure if it's my screen but the fields seem to have a frosty look to them.....sharpening ?

Top man. Thank you, Sir

Hi Brian

Sorry I’ve not been around much lately.

Solitude, what a super shot  Have you done much/ any PP on this? The foreground looks almost frosty. Great depth front to back and I think it would look good printed and framed or on canvas.

Power, mmmm, not too sure on this one. There doesn’t seem to be a central point of interest, Big Ben is a bit surrounded by bits of buildings, sorry for being more critical but I feel there is an idea here but this hasn’t quite made it.

Curve, now I really like that. I would be tempted to crop a teeny tiny bit off the top and bottom where the next line of girders are. I think they either need to be a definite inclusion rather than just a tiny slither.

Still, made me laugh.

Beginning, another great shot, well timed and love the reflection of the adult swan

Alas I have to go now. Fingers crossed I’ll keep up from now on. Cheers.

week 39 - Sweet.

Took a range of shots, including some happy/silly ones but the creepy feel of this one made it stand out for me. Many thanks to Kathie for her continued patience and for being a good sport.

Well, there's my lunchtime giggle sorted....

My first thought was the laying on the floor position is a bit unflattering... but when you consider how unflattering being decorated in sweeties is, that fades into insignificance.

Super take on another of those seemingly easy, but ultimately difficult themes.

Thanks Graham,

It was never meant to be flattering, or funny actually, just creepy!

Hi Brian

Your poor wife and what she has to put up with, mind you I made mine be a corpse last year for one of the themes.
I am not sure wether the picture or the photographer is disturbing/disturbed
An amusing take on the theme:thumbs:
