Week 18 Distant Relative.

Hello my fellow apes, the moment this topic was announced I knew what I wanted to do. We are apes, great apes to be exact. Our closest relatives are Chimpanzees with which we share 98% of our DNA, we are closer to Chimps than they are to any of the other Great Apes. We broke off from our common ancestor about 7 million years ago and Humans arrived in the world, we have discovered over 20 species of human so far, sadly we are the only ones left, however if you are of European decent chances are you have 2% Neanderthal DNA where we bred with them others have Denisovan DNA. I wanted a picture of a chimp but that would of involved a 300 mile trip. So off to Paignton Zoo I went with the intention of taking a picture of a Gorilla. Sadly they were all kept inside so little light and shooting through glass, after much playing around this is the best I can do.

A little let down by the difficult conditions but it's an excellent idea.
Not so distant from a few people in the Hot topics section, though thinking about it that's a little unfair to gorillas.

210mm handheld at 1/5 second was never going to be sharp! Still if I only put my successes up I don't think I would post much!

I could not possibly comment ......................................................................!

You've done well under the circumstances and have captured a rather poignant expression. Nice one.

Fits the theme and I often find plans don't work out
Whenever I see pictures like this it reminds me of the picture of Ndakasi and her keeper

Thanks Helen, I did not want to bin all the photos and I thought this one had really sad eyes.

Now that picture was a really great one, if very sad,

I was at the Wales ape and monkey sanctuary last week - and came away with nothing in terms of shots. Too tricky in their runs and always seem to hide behind something! You did well to get this shot

Thanks Simon, we are traveling to North Wales in September, with your post about Cardiff last week and now the Wales ape and Monkey sanctuary, I am seeing a plan come together. It is always one hell of a ride to NW from Cornwall in a day. maybe a overnight stop is in order!:)

Great shot. As well as being a distant relative it has a distant look in it's eyes.

Cardiff's great (although I would say that wouldn't I?). A stone's throw (well 30-40mins from the Brecon Beacons (now Bannau Brycheiniog), the heritage coastline and the City itself.
The Wales ape and monkey sanctuary is a little bit out of the way (about an 75 mins from me in Barry) up in the Beacons in the middle of nowhere, and it's just that really, a sanctuary. Quite a few animals there but it's primarily for rescues. Not that it's not worth a visit though, and you've got some cracking waterfalls close by.....

That is kind of you Peter, I think he has a sad, distant look in his eyes.

Given the conditions, that's an excellent result.

Thanks Graham I think your being too kind, the more I look at it the less I like it!

What a great take on the theme Roger, good one!

That's a cracking image for fragile Roger, beautiful butterflies and a good clean BG.
Thanks Dave, I was sat down enjoying the sun when this fellow chanced along, luckily I had the camera with the right lens right next to me.

Three fragile items in the one shot looks like a strand of web coming off the Flower.

1. Do not go walking far to far downhill. 2. Don't go out in just a T Shirt when the sun is about to set. 3. Take your heart medication with you. 4. Take your phone with you. OOPS I swear this photography lark is going to kill me! I am not so robust as I used to be.

Love the week 19 close up for Fragile. I love the macro / close up view that shows the other inhabitants of the world in detail.
Thanks Adam it was a really lucky shot, didn't even have my macro lens with me just a telephoto,

Nice shot Roger, your commentary made me chuckle... :D

Thanks Bill I love the sea stacks at Bedruthen Steps It makes me chuckle at what an idiot I was, I just kept walking that few hundred yards further to get a better shot! Wasn't chuckling when I had the angina attack trying to walk back up the cliff with no heart spray!

One very big robust rock.
Well done for staying the course when the attack came.

Thanks Pete, this 52 thing is turning into a extreme sport, one year I trapped myself in a sea cave, then I fell into the sea at -3 now I go and do what I am always shouting at bloody tourists about, going out unprepared!

Your story made me laugh until I read about your angina attack. Glad you're okay. I have been going away on photography holidays with 4 friends for 15 years now and three of us now look for more "easy access" locations. We're not mountain goats anymore!
