Canon EOS 50D

A first look at the details of the new Canon EOS 50D

Earlier today (08/21/08) the Canon China website had a page describing a Canon EOS 50D camera. The URL of the page is http://www.canon.com.cn/products/camera/eos/50d/index.html. Since this is an official Canon website, the information about the Canon EOS 50D seems to be real.

The page is no longer available, which suggests that it was posted in error.

My translation (via online resources - I don't speak Chinese!) of the EOS 50D page when it was visible seems to suggest the following:

The name is the Canon EOS 50D
A 15.1 MP CMOS sensor
A Canon Digic 4 processor (the translation says "digital video" processor, but I'm not sure I can trust the translation 100% and even if I can I don't know that calling it a "video" processor means anything)
Anti-shake feature built into the camera (hard to believe, but great if true). The translation I have is "Anti-Shake feature built-in camera, due to lower Shoudou the fuzzy images, taken more fun!". I'm not sure what "Shoudou" is! I suspect they are probably talking about an IS system, with the IS in the lens. I really do find it hard to believe that Canon would offer body based IS at this stage of the game.
Additional measures to eliminate dust on the sensor.
6.3 fps (3fps option)
35 metering zones with evaluative, spot, center weighted and partial metering.
9 cross type AF zones
14-bit A/D
Face Detection
Micro AF adjustment
920,000 pixel VGA LCD monitor
Basic ISO range from 100-3200, with 6400 and 12800 available via a custom function.
Live View
Magnesium alloy body
Shutter good for "10 million" cycles (I'm 100% sure this is a mistranslation, and is almost certainly 100,000. The position of decimal points get lost in translation sometimes).
That's about all for now. Stay tuned to this page and I'll update it if and when more information comes in. No word on price or availability of course. Since it seems to be aimed at the Nikon D300 as competition, my guess would be a price in the region of $1300 - $1500 (the D300 currently sells for around $1600). Availablity probably in the early fall (September/October) would be my guess.

UPDATE: Though the machine translation seems to be saying that IS is in the camera, I'm informed that a human translation says the stabilization is, in fact, in the lens.

What was wrong with the 40D lol - mine has been gathering dust since i got my 1D II N but it is still a fab camera.

Kinda interested in the 5D II though :)

1510 megapixels? That makes the new 50mp Hassy redundant then

I see Canon are keeping the quaint Kiss nomenclature for it too :nono:

The built-in IS seems like a bit of pandering to the Sony Alpha crowd

Click the image for the full spec sheet ;)

if this is true i might have to hold of my purchase at the end of the year for the 40D. If its released in march when does it hit stores?

If its true and the specs are as stated, thank god they've decided to upgrade the LCD to 920,000 pixels. Was one of the issues that Canon were really lagging behind with..

the stated specs bodes well for the 1D III successor then :woot:

Max ISO of 12800:nuts:

The 92 megapixel screen should be good :D

Doesn't take a genius to put the decimal point in the right place though!

92 megapixel screen? That would be 10 times the size of the screen on a Nikon D300,

You'll need quite a strong strap for such a big camera if the LCD screen is nearly three feet across the diagonal :lol:

Where did you get March from? Its possibly September!

i really dont know - i thought it said march on one of the above posts - clearly i was wrong!

Sweet. This looks like a nice step up from my 30D.

Gotta love how every other forum seems to be full of people moaning that it's just an upgraded 40D and not the 1D killer that they hoped for :D

I'm hoping it's a September release ... with a cashback next spring when I'm ready to buy!

after reading this post i've been checking a couple of sites, most of which refer to a Spring 2009 launch (maybe march or may... none seem to agree on the exact month)...

You mean those specs are supposed to be genuine? if so it must be a very poor translation, not something you'd expect from Canon.

Lots of suspect stuff in there, like the camera is only 105 grams, that's a third of the weight of my 30D

The previous release schedule for the x0D series has been 18 months which would put a 50D at Spring 2009 - but maybe they are responding to the D300 and bringing the release date forward to prevent people jumping systems.

I've heard rumours from various sites suggesting Photokina in September. Being released on Canon Chinas website may have some truth in the matter.

Although I think the 5D is the one most in need of refreshing.

Also, in Japan some peoples discussed that it should be released in Sep.
We will see :).

In fact, I hope they could release 5D MKII soon.

Unimpressed, it just seems as though Canon have urinated over the 40D with a popularity ****.

15mp on a cropped sensor and ISO 12560, can you say "HEEELLLOOOOOOOO NOISE". I'm going to be surprised if the noise isn't worse than the 40D across the board.

Also, i highly doubt that it has in body IS and is a purely a translation error, it just wouldn't make any sense at all for Canon to start offering in body IS on any of the range.

Really Canon seem to have not addressed any of the 40D major failings to the 300D, still only 9 point AF compared to 51 points for the Nikon, still 6fps vs the 8fps with the grip on the Nikon. Improved screen size/resolution is a welcome addition and surely something that'll be seen on the 5DII but gimmicks like 'Face recognition AF' (which i presume will be a live view only feature) further help to mark Canon's credibility at providing the features that people really want.

You do realise that this is quite possibly not accurate information don't you? this kind of thing happens every time a 'new' model is due.

Oh yes of course. Could be complete BS especially seeing as though the xxD lifecycle is 18 months a 50D isn't due for another 6 months. However, everyone knows that the 40D is outperformed by the D300 and I'm sure canon are not keen on losing anymore of their market share. There have been leaks of this nature in the past which have turned out to be accurate and traditionally Canon announce new products around this time in August. I guess only time will tell :)

Photokina Show is next Month. Ideal time for rumours to start to get the journalists salivating.

Canon traditionally tie launches to the big trade shows - Photokina in September and PMA in February. The consumer cameras from Canon have had a 18 month release cycle, but their is no reason why Canon have to stick to this.

I don't think all that info is right at all.

Yeah can see a 15mp xxD camera coming out, but ISO 12800 on a cropped sensor? Urm....nope. That's just stupid, no cropped sensor could shoot with an ISO that high without horrendous noise.

Oh and they haven't officially announced it yet, the specificaion sheet came down minuates after it was posted. So was probably a mistake or just done to stir up some excitement since the 40D's life cycle isn't over yet.

Canon would never release a new body randomly this close to Photokina. My guess is that they might release a 50D and 5DMKII/3D/7D at Photokina in a month. They need to with Nikon releasing the D700.

Hi,

yet another reason NOT to buy a new camera, as the depreciation this causes across a range of models is phenomenal, glad I got rid of my 350D and 30D and then bought a used 1D, I wouldn't touch a brand new model with a barge pole ( well not unless she was nice! ;) ).

How many new bodies has Canon and Nikon produced in the last 3 years?, no wonder we are such a throwaway society.

Mike.

no wonder we are such a throwaway society.

Mike.

On the contrary, when's the last time you heard of someone throwing away a dSLR? They get recycled and passed on, the second hand market for photography stuff is masssive. You have a 1D that someone bought new years ago that you still get use of. I've got a 10D that i bought used years ago and is still going strong.

dSLRs are still such a new technology that of course there are going to be regular updates to existing models, it's just progression.

Hi,

I didn't mean literally :D

Mike.

I did read somewhere, from a credible source that Canon will now be upgrading the models on a 12 monthly basis instead of 18 months. Maybe that would answer the posting on Canon China/Japan about the 50D

If the rumour is true about the 50D then the spec listed her still falls short of the D300, which is an amazing camera. A friend of mine has the D300 and the results are great. In low light it is much better than my 400D. Though my 400D is not any ware near the D300's league is really is a great DSLR !
