What is there out there for under £250 ?

I bought a d80 with other bits and bobs recently as an entry into this world of photography. I'm thoroughly enjoying it but I'm beginning to feel the limitations with the body I.e low light performance , noisy on higher iso numbers and lower resolution. It's been a good camera to get to grips with the basics but now Im thinking it's not just a passing interest I'm willing to splurge a bit more money on a body. But not loads.

2nd hand d3300s seem to come in budget and on paper it seems to give vastly superior performance. But there also seems to be a lot of other models... I would also want to stick with Nikon as I'll just keep the lenses and other bits. I'll ne able to sell on my d80 for pretty much my purchase price too.

Any suggestions? Any ones to avoid? My interests so far have actually been macro photography and landscapes.. I've not got a lot of interest in shots of people! Haha!

Thanks

Oh and should say, I'm a newbie here so can't see the classifieds for probably another month.

D7000.

Owned one a couple of years back. Sold it.

Bought another one last night.

The d7000 was on my watch list actually. The fact you've went back to it is high praise for it! We may have a winner already!

D3 ? Massive performance, awesome build quality - cheap as chips now.

I think the D5200 is about the peak of the image quality for price at the moment 24 Mpix, 14 stops of Dynamic range and better low light performance than the D7000/7100. MBP have one at the moment in good condition for £250.

However any of the Nikon 16 Mpix or 24Mpix bodies are a huge step up from the D80 in terms of image quality.

Wouldn't touch one for the OPs budget of £250 though!

A D300 will be in your range, possibly an S model. Tough as nails, pro body and a great camera.

So the question is now, why would I go d5200 over d7000? Done a bit of research on both and both have glowing reviews. GAS is sooo much fun!

the d7000 has issues :police: would not get one. search youtube for vids about the buffer rate and slow focus issues just saying ...get the 7100 all fixed in the upgrade hth Mike

You go d5200 if you want the best sensor technology you can get for that money.

You go d7000 if you want an advanced dslr with lovely large viewfinder, dual LCD`s, loads of AF points, 100% accuracy viewfinder, dual memory, dual command dials, nice big grip, more dedicated buttons, more customisation, better build quality, some weather sealing, tougher in general

The two used ones i owned had excellent fast focusing.

Who me or the other guy trying to say to get a £400+ used camera when you said £250 max LOL

It was actually for you, but in a sarcastic tone; none of my quotes or emojis worked so the joke lost its punch! :D

I have a d7000 which I've been using for about a year with kit lens (Shame - I know!). I would highly recommend it. It's got so much going on for such a good price.

Had a D7000 before the D700.

Brilliant camera and would recommend it.

If you get one with the 18-105 kit lens be prepared to repair the plastic mount when it breaks (cos it will).

Easy job with replacement from eBay.

Oh no, gas has struck.... it starts with a couple hundred and you 'll end up with a couple thousand worth.

An FM. Small, light, simple, and £50. Requires manual focussing and lenses with aperture rings. Or an F3. Or an FE2. Or don't you know how to load a cassette of film?

Don't tell the missus but I just bought a d7000 off mpb. Cashwise it's small fry until I got proper GAS. Problem is, I'm a bass player so I've already got a different GAS. I'll fit it in somewhere!

Anyone want to buy a d80?

You did not even pretend to stop and think and agonise about it (pretending to yourself that is). You are bad, really bad. Enjoy the toy when it arrives.

If the OP had been wanting a film camera I would have thought he would a) mentioned it and b) put it in the film section!

Good buy and you will get proper GAS but i'm sure you have that with the guitars already..lol

I've owned 2 d7000 and it's my only camera. I love it. My 150-600mm is permanently attached, and I get great results, even at iso 1600, and occasionally 3200.

I'm glad I've sent with the d7000. The controls seem to be exactly like my d80 whereas then d5200 controls seem a bit 'dumb downed'. I'm only slightly worried about the sensor 'only' being 16mp over the 24mp d5200. Hope i don't contract megapixel envy! Haha expect a 'what nikon body under £500' thread in a few months.....

I own D5100 which happens to have same sensor as D7000. You can get lovely images from this. As for the next thread, save up a little more and get D7200 ;).

Have fun with your toy :)

Edit:
If I knew what I know now, I wouldn't bother with D5xxx, would jump straight to D7xxx. Pixel count is not everything...

Just a little something to make you feel better.

With a 24mp sensor all of your mistakes or tiny movement or shake or wrong shutter speed,

Well it shows up in glorious high detail and stands out a mile.

16 is good, I like it. That's why I don't mind buying a second d7000.

And personally I would forget cheap zoom`s and get prime lenses. Then a good zoom when you can afford it.

This pic was done with a d7000 and £80 50mm 1.8 D.

Why would you get mega pixel envy?

That's just playing into the manufacturer's marketing hands!

This was taken on a 6.1mp Nikon D70 with a crap Sigma 70-300 lens.

It's all about light and technique.

Do they actually lay white tarmac then? :D

Wheels are sharp too - they need to be 'going round'. My standard is, if you can see the spokes, chuck it away. ;)

Didn't realise I'd put this up for critique. Oh I didn't!

Just trying to help a beginner out.

This was purely to suggest you don't need a high MP camera for decent shots.

But you knew that didn't you?

If you look at the exif data you'll see was a long time ago.

but you're just interested in taking the p***.

I woudn't comment on the shot itself, but there is no exif data on flicker.... ;) :D :exit:

The op was unspecific, as is this equipment forum.

I would recommend d7000 which is available with great features and also comes with good price.

Just curious?
Have you got this body that you recommend it so emphatically?
As most people would "recommend" based on their ownership & user experience of a camera body. It would good if you could share a few images taken with it including some insight as to the camera features that aided you getting 'the shot'.
