Yes
I Love the 24-70 f2.8L...But can't afford it. Simple.

What's the next best 3rd party choice?

Have a look at the Sigma 24-70 F2.8. Some on here go for about £270 for a minter.

The 24-105 f/4L is a bit cheaper, lighter and around the same quality although IMO not quite there and a stop slower too.

You could try the Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 out, I was thinking of getting that but I wanted to stay with Canon so settled for the 24-105L which IMO is pretty decent for a 'kit' lens.

I would recommend the 24 – 105 f4L as a good alternative, if you get a white boxed one they tend to go for a lot less.

Since when was this lens a Third Party one?:bonk:

I would first try to find Tokina 28-70mm f/2.6-2.8 (not SV version), then perhaps Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 as a third best. I have tried sigma and it was utterly horrible; I'd rather get canon 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM if it is for crop.
Chances are you will end up with Canon, but maybe by the time it will be the new superior IS version (rumoured for years now).

are we thinking pick up then sell for similar money to buy the L later or something to keep.

I have a sigma, I will probably have the L in a few months :s

Its to put on my 5d and do wedding/corporate/event work with. I'd like to buy right first time and keep rather than trade in in 6 months time. Iq is top of my agenda and i've read great things about the sigma.

Sigma 24-70 HSM version! I've tried it against the Canon and the Sigma is actually slightly sharper. Remember the HSM version as the non HSM is suppose to be pretty poor!

it simply doesn't compare

What do you think?
Is this a sharp shot?
Guess the following:

A) lens used to take this shot?
b) f number?

No cheating! You'll only spoil it for yourselves!!

I give you my word, no PP sharpening done. Only contrast, saturation etc.......

Crikey thats a hell of a price...

Get the Sigma 24-60mm f2.8 if you can find one.

Mine is sharp open wide in most focal lengths and much sharper then the copies of the 24-70mm and 28-70mm Sigma's I had before.

It is the general consensus of the users if you search online that it was the sharpest Sigma short zoom made before the latest HSM model (that costs 3 times as much).

Ok, it's a Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 EX DG

That shot of Ruby was taken @f2.8 ISO 800

Just got it today, for a grand total of £250 all in.

For 250 notes I am incredibly impressed with it..........

aarrgg.. me !!! .. by f3.5 sigma I meant 24-70mm f2.8 sigma ex dg or hsm shot in f3.5 .
btw as I said I have the ex dg macro as well. love it, don't like the sticky zoom at 24-28mm + noisy but I don't care.

This.

Holds it's value well and worth the investment.

Forget the Canon 24-70L, it's not sharp wide open. Not by my standards and I'm on my second one.

Conversely, the one I had was horribly soft at f/2.8.

The problem with Sigmas is the variability. Whilst some are excellent, many are far from it. If you can find one that you know for sure is a good copy then great, otherwise steer clear IMO.

Older Canon 28-80L f2.8-f4 is worth a look at and go pretty cheap on ebay these days !

I can second the recommendation for the Sigma 24-60mm. I also have the Canon 24-105 but it's the Sigma which is never off my 5D...
