Cheers Phil

For the last few months and last couple of years to a lesser extent I've had a pretty crap diet, a combination if stress, time and cost didn't help me stay heathy, now I have more time and a temp job I can deal with it better. More fresh fruit and veg, less crap and more variety in food

Sounds like you'll do just fine. Keep us updated on your progress.

First session in the gym today, about 45 mins of cardio - cycling and rowing, then 30 mins of weights. Hoping to do similar about 3 times a week (more if I have nothing else to do).

Little tip for you buddy...

Always best to do weight training after a warm up, followed then by cardio (assuming a steady, moderate pace).

It's to do with liver vs skeletal muscle energy storage but basically:

The energy used when weight training, which is stored in the muscles used during whatever muscles trained, will be depleted if you do cardio first.

Just a little tip that makes a big difference to your performance and gains.

Work done sir.

 Cheers Phil, very new to this so any advice is much appreciated.

Exactly 3 months after commencement; 13% and 71kgs now.

That's 2 Stone and a massive 15% reduction in fat.

I can confirm that with or without exercise, I lose at the same rate.

5 weeks to go until I hit target (was supposed to be 23rd July but I put myself back a week with a crazy huge meal 2 weeks ago - well worth it though!).

Starting to really miss mr headshots now

I wouldn't worry about it phil - just rise above the criticism and be the bigger man (figuratively but not litterally by the sound of it  )

I got out of the habit of going to the gym at work 3-4 times a week although when I moved into my new place I lost 1/2 stone

I put that down to decorating 5 rooms in two weeks which had the double whammy effect of keeping me occupied and not eating crap!

Anyway.... 3 months later and my weight has crept up again (around 15st 4lb) so I'm giving the Insanity workout a go!

Tough isn't the word for it but I'm half way through my second week, have lost a couple of pound (they do say you could retain 3-4lb of water during the first week where the body is trying to protect/repair muscles) and starting to notice my stomach getting tighter and my trousers are fitting better.

Determined to see it through as I want to be "fit" which wasn't really happening at the gym.

Hi guys,

Phil said it might be worth me popping this on this thread for anyone who is interested in a great workout.

Worth a shot I suppose. Good luck to all with the fizz. I'm on it too at the mo. running and MTB.

Lost 8 kilos so far. The wife is the incentive though as she is into it too. Plus, it's a great way to spend done time together too :)

9 weeks...

About 5/6 weeks to go now - was going to be finished on the 23rd July but I had the most huuuuuuuuge meal (which I don't regret) with my sister in law and her husband and my wife who I haven't seen for 4 months is coming back to me next week so will probably set myself back another 1-1.5% from that :)

@Phil how did it go?

Just joined up and trawled through the 20 odd pages in this thread and I am intrigued to hear the result.

Personally, I changed my diet lifestyle: 3 square meals a day with fruit/carrot stick/nuts for in between snacks, no sugar, very little junk food and banned coke in the house. I also took took up badminton and MTB'ing and feeling much better. Lost 23kgs but want to lose (did I spell it correctly?) a few more as I just started running and I still feel heavy - need to lighten the load on my knees

Started this year at 11st 10lbs, had crept up to 12st by March and was getting to the "lose weight or buy a complete set of new trousers" point. Took action - change in diet only (eliminate ice cream, introduce fruit and other items with more fibre, slightly reduce the amount of pasta or rice with meals) as I don't "do" exercise. The fruit was a result of being diagnosed with mild piles (the medical procedure that led to that diagnosis was not one I care to repeat, so I took the treating physician's advice about increasing my fibre intake seriously)

Got down to 11st 4lbs by June and stuck there for a few months, then was ill and lost a further 4lbs to take me to 11st, which is about what I weighed when I was 30 and where I have stayed the last couple of months. BMI = 20.9.

I no longer struggle to to up the waist button on my jeans, which I consider a result.

Sorry there has to be one, big-head, show-off, smart-arse, call be what you will....but I'm proud of what I've achieved.

I've shed over 3.5 stone since the beginning of the year.

Motivation........HEALTH, heart problem, what bigger motivation does one need?

I went from over 14.5 stone to 11.

Method.......simple, will power, cut out all the junk and eat LESS, it's not rocket science.

I'm 70, and next month (20th) and I'm booked in for a Pacemaker.....I'm hoping to see 80+ if I'm lucky.

I also walk vigorously 4 miles a day, rain or shine, but that contributes hardly anything to the weight loss, equivalent to 3 slices of bread or so.

The down side is, it's bl***y expensive, I've had to buy a complete new wardrobe (no, not the wooden thing) but what goes inside it.

I HATE buying clothes, the only thing that still fitted me were my sox, shoes and hankies.

Yours,

Big-head, show-off, smart-arse, call be what you will....but I'm proud of what I've achieved.

That's not showing off, being big headed or a smart arse Dave!

Without wanting to sound patronising or condescending, at your age it must be more difficult to lose weight........ I'm going on the principle that in my early 20s I could eat everything and anything and I weighed about 10st but by my late 20s I weighed 15 and now I'm in my mid 30s I'm finding is nigh on impossible to even lose 7lb!

So that's a great achievement! Well done :D

In 1978 I was16.9stones and after 18 months of managing my food intake I achieved 11stone. Currently I am now 10.6stone which shows that diet alone will succeed!

However eating is generally boring but with getting older and having arthritis the benefits are enormous.

My advice don't go daft with dieting at first but just stick at eating good food and success will be yours.

Didn't spot this thread earlier. I've managed to lose 20kg from 105 to 85kg. I really want to be down to 70kg but have been aiming for 80kg. Done mostly by following the 5:2 diet. Debatable about whether it actually works but for me, it forced me to stop snacking all the time, which in turn helped shrink my stomach size down so I became more full more quickly. The rest of the weight loss has been from attempting the couch to 5km program. I've currently plateaued and been struggling to lose any more weight.

I've started on the Harcombe diet.

I'm now 3 weeks in and have lost about 12 pounds, which I've never achieved before. Dieting has never ever worked for me - and through exercise I never have lost weight either. One of my problems is I dont like salad, which has always been a staple part of diets in the past.

Still losing weight now - my target is to go from 14 stone 6 down to 12 stone 7, so still a way to go but it's working !!

I've been away from this forum for a while and slipped back into bad eating habbits. Had a check-up at the doctors the other day and i'm 19 1/2 stone and my blood pressure is rather high. So for drinks, i'm only drinking water and tea with no suger.

At the moment i'm eating less often and avoiding suggery or fatty food (chocolate biscuits were my biggest problem) and also eating smaller meals but I could see myself drifting back into bad habbits if I don't write out some sort of diet plan.
I think I need to have set meal times and a choice of meals and then I can print it off and stick to it.

I have my breakfast at 7am (bowl of cereal in semi-skimmed milk with no suger)
My next meal is at 12 and is usually two eggs on two peices of brown bread.
At 4pm I have a weight watchers microwave meal and a large portion of mixed veg (carrots, sweetcorn, peas and green beans)

I don't have anything set for after 4pm so need to work out what I can eat and at what time I can eat after 4pm.

Any ideas?

Caffeine pushes up your blood pressure so switch to decaf or reduce to no more than two cups a day. Have a look at either the low GI diet or the DASH diet. The former is promoted in the UK and the latter in the US and have been shown to work.

I didn't know that, but I do only drink decaff tea because caffeine gives me migraines.

I just wrote this up.

Forgot this thread existed when I started my diet 3 months ago. Eating crap and with disability limiting exercise options, I reached 15st 5lbs. I haven't followed and specific diets or counted any calories/points, I have just literally cut the crap.

Chocolate
Crisps
Sausage/Bacon rolls
Burgers
Chips
Eggs & Cheese (dramatically reduced)

Work was always the problem where it's easy to eat fast food, especially as our sandwich van does sausage rolls, bacon rolls, pasties, pies etc. I started to take my own lunch in which consists of salads/rice/pasta with either chicken or tuna

On an evening, I pretty much eat normally including a curry night every week and, if I want anything between meals, it's will either be fruit or the occasional yoghurt.

I want to be under 12 stone eventually which means losing at least 47 pounds. So far, I've lost 20 pounds so nearly at the half way mark.

Struggling to lose weight despite 1200kcals/day five days a week and 600kcal/day two days a week. Gonna bump it to 1200kcal all round and see if it'll shift.

Everything's logged on myfitnesspal. I have lost weight but it's now plateaued. Hence the reluctance to have more carbs before a run when I really want it to be limited so I can count in the kcals expended in a run in my calculations.

What do you want to see? Graph of calories over the week? Typical daily intake? If so, in terms of food, kcals or macros for the day?

Oops didn't see this. You still around?

Medication won't put weight on...unnecessary food will ;)

Whatever you say, and however hard you think it is for you, the answer will come back to you reducing what you eat...

When i 1st went on the meds they told me one of the side effect was weight gain, went up to 13st,as you say cutting back did help now down to 12.3,just seem to got stuck their, but will try to cut back more :)

The more I know the more I can assist...feel free not to reveal anything but if you do I'll take a look, see where the fault lies.
Am currently lurgified so in bed and on iphone. Will write up a typical fasting and nonfasting day of calories when I'm a bit better and am on the laptop.
