Hi, OK I no you can mix the 2 GB and the 4 GB modules but is it better to put both 4 GB in the first 2 slots and 2 GB in the second two slots or 1 and 1 in each?
Thanks
Russ

this would be better in the computers board for an answer from the likes of @neil_g or @arad85, but in my (inexpert) opinion ram is better in matched pairs of the same size and latency - so yes assuming they came in pairs you'd put the 2 4GB in the first two slots and the 2x2GB in the second two (though i'd be tempted to sell the 2GB pair and buy another matching 4GB pair )

what pete said really.

yes you can get away with it 95% of the time. however each type will have different timings, latency etc so wont be running optimally and/or may cause random crashes.

personally id say sell what you have and replace it with a matched set.

Hi, Many Thanks for the replies some good info.
Russ

On some motherboards the slots are colour coded, put the same modules in the same colours if that is the case.

Yeah... check the mobo manual as to ordering. My latest mobo has 4 slots, A, B, C, D. A&C and B&D are paired, so my two sticks go in alternate slots. What is vitally important is to get the pairing right. I always buy RAM in pairs as for most CPUs there are 2 separate memory channels that can be used so you get more speed out of the memory system if you match the sizes. If you want to mix and match, make sure you get the same voltage and CAS timings. I tend to buy the same memory if I'm adding extra, but I have used non-matched sets in the past (I've had a setup of 2x4G and 2x1G running fine)

Hi, Thank you for the replies.
To be honest a little bit confused so am I hope including a diagram of the board for confirmation of where I should place 2 X 4 GB and 2 X 2 GB
I will be replacing the 2 GB modules at a later date with two of the same 4 GB modules.
Thanks
Russ

Put the two 4's in slots 1&3 and the two 2's in slots 2&4 or vice versa
