2 Cameras, which one?

Why buy the canon? Be nice to know why etc?

Because its a relatively new model that is good for beginners, there are loads of good, cheap lenses available and its easy to upgrade within the make to keep lenses etc if you ever want a new body. This is the same for most other makes though...

Awesome advice. Cheers:bang:

Todays events were out of my control.

On a more serious note only YOU can decide which camera suits you
When i wanted my first dSLR I could not decide between the Canon 400d or the Nikon D40(i think it was:shrug:)
In the end i went to a shop, picked them both up and bought the one I felt most comfortable with, in my case that was the Canon.
2 and a bit years on I still have it, have upgraded lenses etc but not felt the need to upgrade the body yet.
I am sure that the Nikon would have served me equally well.

Just checked with my local Comet and they have the Sony A450 for £299!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have looked at one and it did seem bulky. Got to make a quick decision now as i can't wait til next tuesday for Jessops to get the D3000 in as i won't be here!!

Or, my local camera shop, not Jessops, has the 1000D in stock and the Pentax K-x (£399).

Now guys, i know this is partly my fault for taking so long but Jessops did say it would be in on sat!!! Now the date has been moved to next tuesday!

Got to decide now, buy the A450 for £299 or get the Pentax K-x or Canon 1000D. If i don't decide by this week the wife will leave me and everyone on here will spit in my face!!!

Sorry guys. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Again!!)

Amazon have the d3000 in stock. If you ordered now you'd have it in the morning.

Pixmania have the D3000 in stock for £329 - if you're happy with the camera, why not buy online?

If you've looked at the sony and didn't like it, don't buy it - you'll regret it.

The k-x is a great camera, but costs a bit more.

Otherwise, see if jessops will lend you something for you holidays?

PC World (online in in two local stores to me), Currys (on line and in local store) and dixons (local store) ALL have the Kx twin lens kit for £450.

Most of above mentioned local stores also have the Canon and Nikon in stock. If there prices are more than you have seen alsewhere they will either match the price or give hefty discount on essential products (camera bag, tripod, memory card etc).

Just go to your nearest electrical store and haggle

Forgot to mention, if the Kx twin lens kit is a bit too pricey for you, can you borrow the extra ?
The 55-200DAL lens sells for minimum £100 on ebay, this would make the Kx with 18-55DAL £350, bargain :)

When I read that I was getting a bit flustered, as I just paid about £530 for the twin lens kit.

But mine came with the 55-300 instead of the 55-200.

Still a great deal for what is the "Best Entry-level DSLR of the Year 2010" according to TIPA.

Canon 1000D (Comes with IS lens) and Pentax K-x both £399 in a local camera shop.

I guess either of these are a better bet than the D3000?

If so, do you think the Canon is the best buy or is the newer K-x a better bet?

You're asking someone who just considered the D3000, 1000D, and K-x and bought the K-x.

I already gave you a detailed response, Kx is far superior to the D3000, Pentax have IS built into the camera body, so you pay for it only once. You can buy thirty year old lenses from eBay for a few quid that still perform 8/10 compared to pro lenses and you even get IS on them as the IS is in the body.

One update on my previous Kx spec - all 11 focus points are individually selectable. The Kx was priced a bit higher than the Canon and Nikon entry levels, but now with price drop it is a clear winner, blows the other two out of the water.

I reckon the Kx would do you many years, the other two you will want to upgrade withi a year or two.

Cheers. Thanks for that. Guess you did a fair bit of hair pulling like me? Guess nobody is a bad as me!

Appreciate your help / comments. K-x looks like the winner then. Thanks

I narrowed my choice down to 3-4 options based on specs and reviews. Then went into a shop and handled the cameras on my short list and bought the one that felt the best to me.

Not too complex a process and a lot like the way I buy other things really.

Aaaaaaaagh!!!! Jessops just rang me to say that the D3000 won't be in now until next tuesday!!! Everywhere else out of stock where i live. Nooooooooo!!!

Am i jinxed?

I am going on hols on sunday morning!!

Unless you live somewhere unkown by humanity I'm unaware of any stock issues with the D3000! I can get one to your local store by Sat if you tell the store to phone my store tomorrow and I'll DHL it by 12...

Mmmmm

Mmmmm

What store is that?

Jessops don't have any in stock. My other local Photography shop is out of stock of the D3000. So, i have to get a DSLR by sat at the very latest as on hols Sunday!

You think the D3000 is the best of the bunch:

D3000
Sony A450
Canon 1000D
Pentax K-x

These are the ones i have narrowed my search down to.

I was happy to buy the D3000, until i found out i can't get one til next tuesday. The others in my list i can get tomorrow

A local photography shop has the Canon 1000D with the kit lens, with IS, for £399. I am seriuosly thinking of cancelling Jessops order, which i was going to do tomorrow and then buying the 1000D.

Sony A450 is a good price but it felt like a big brick in my hand1

Pentax K-x also felt right but i did like the Canon.

D3000 is out of the question as non available where i live until next week!

So, going to 'feel' the K-x and 1000D tomorrow and buy one of them.

Also, if i got the 1000D tomorrow, what IS lens type should i look for with 'other' lens manufacturers? I quite fancy something along the lines of 18-135 but would need one that has IS.

Also, what SDHC card would you guys recommend?

If you're thinking of spending £399 on the canon and then going out and buying another lens - why not just get the k-x twin lens kit mentioned about for £450?

Thanks for input.

Only asking for lens advice so that i have an idea about camera choice.

Going to Jessops later to get my money back, then off to other camera shop to buy either the 1000D or K-x.

If you are fed up with my thread don't read / post. Simples

there is plenty of stock I have three sat on my shelf tell your store to ring store 0137

just to let you know that bulky is a good thing

i did a wedding last friday and when i picked my gear bag up the contents had fell out from about 6 foot high, my a300 smashed against the ground and the 55-200mm attached to it, lucky me there was nothing wrong with it and its working perfectly ever since!

:lol:I've just read all the way through this thread and it's given me a better laugh than I've had for days. Nothing to do with photography of course, but very entertaining...

Tony........not fed-up......no offense mate but it's fascinating

like watching a train crash again and again...

seriously - good luck and I hope you get it all sorted in time for the holiday......

Guess i am not as good on choosing my first DSLR as you lot seem to be. Sorry for the hassle i have caused you all guys.

Please close the thread as it seems to be annoying some and i will for elsewhere for advice.

Cheers to everyone who has put up with my constant questions and for me not being able to decide on my first DSLR.

as a strop that not a very good one. You can spit your dummy far better then that - :dummy:

people are getting a bit fed up with all the advice - true, but mostly its coming over as a good natured laugh (albeit a bit at your expense).

now flounce off with a bit of style man and go and buy a camera............

Not a strop, just dont want to upset anyone anymore.

Thanks for all your help though.

You seem to have also skipped over the advice 18-270 has given twice. He clearly works for Jessops and has offered to ship one to your local store for you!

I would never just buy a camera because it was in stock.

laughing I think rather then upset. There has been some great advice in this thread, you could take some. But the most important advice is to buty a camera. Any camera. Today.

It reads as a strop now

My local Comet have the A450 in stock for £299 so going to get one of those tonight with the misses.

Thanks all.

Well, hope you are all sitting down. Please, if you have any drinks in your hands put them down now! Keep a firm grip and try not to fall over or off a chair:

***k me at last :thumbs: now am looking forward to seeing some pictures.

just so I'm sure - this is in your hands and not the shop on order??

Praise the Lord.

Yes, it is in my hands, so to speak. On the kitchen table, battery charging!!!

No, D3000, not being in stock made me look at the Canon and others in a different light. I am glad i went for Canon.

Going to look for an 18-135 or more IS lens next and probably sell the IS kit lens.

I just had to pick my self up off the floor,
Well done now get out and use it, should have gone Nikon though:bang:
