buy the Nikon, you've more choice long term for lenses and you'll sell it easier.

Buy it today and take some photos - otherwise its looking like we be here next year asking the same questions..................:bonk:

lol, just found out the Nikon is sold but the shop will be getting more in. Apparently they are from Argos, either returned unused or refurbed from Nikon. Approx under 1 month old too.

Still a good deal at £280? Is a D80 a better camera?

just buy a camera - you can get d3000 new for £280 - http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/

d80's good, but a generation old now.

Nikon D3000 has the "best' kit lens of the three. i.e. the other two are completely awful. Nikon has less annoying shutter sound too. Just remember to keep the pop-up flash off at all times, use manual modes, get better lens and all will be well.

I couldn't disagree with this advice more if I tried.

The IS kit lens of Canons which has shipped now since the 450D (the non IS kit lens is now history) is perfectly fine optically apart from a bit of barrel distortion below 22ish mm. the IS/VR difference is much of a muchness, but I've been able to hand hold Canon's 18-55 at 18mm for well under 1/6 and get sharp images. Basically for still objects you get almost as much light advantage with this lens as you do a very fast prime. The optical quality of the lens is obviously not going to match something that costs 10 times more, but it really isn't the disaster which you constantly claim it to be. It does beg the question whether you've actually tried it; along with all the Sigma lenses which you consistently condemn as well.

As for keeping off popup flash, it's tremendously useful for a little fill flash here and there, and telling someone to start off using manual mode isn't going to work for everyone even if it did for you. My 1Ds does not have a flash and it bloody bugs me, but for the amount of times I actually use flash I'll be buggered if I'm going to purchase a flashgun... yet anyway! The included flash on SLRs is a godsend.

No, the non-IS is shipped with 1000D. That lens is not even suitable for a use as a doorstop. I am not discussing the IS version, but even that is not so good.

I am glad there is no flash on your 1Ds. You are now less likely to bug people around you by using one. I think I am not the only one who doesn't like flash in my face. It doesn't really improve the photos apart from a couple isolated cases using -2EV compensation, which beginner would never know. 430EX does take care of lighting in a more sophisticated way and doesn't cost that much...

well, that is interesting. I have seen a few kits for the 1000D which come with the IS lens.

If you buy the 1000D NEW from Jessops/jacobs/Amazon or warehouse express (for example) you ge the 18-55 NON IS lens.

When I got my camera I was fortunate to get the IS version of the kit lens. Shortly after Canon stopped including the IS lens with the 1000D and would only include it with the 500D upwards.
Only now are you starting to see 1000D bundles being included with the IS version again though. Even then you have to hunt for it!

We don't know where you want to take your photography and you may be happy snapping the kids and leaving the camera in the bag for weeks on end  If that's the case get either entry level cameras and see where your hobby takes you.

If you want a little more then maybe a d200 pro body would be a better option or a Canon equivalent? (if there is one) I realise that it is a big layout but as said previously worse ways you can get most of your money back if you decide to sell on at a later date.

The internal motor missing in some Nikon's is a royal pain I would think as if you have the motor I believe you will have over 50 years worth of compatible glass to fit on the front of your camera body

No go out and buy yourself a camera tomorrow :annoyed:

Thanks guys.

Sorry to be a pain in not deciding quickly!

Shop who had the D3000 said they were 1 month old, refurb / returns from Argos, £279.

They should be getting more in maybe next week, with 6 month warranty. May very well go for this next week. Got to wait and see. In the meantime i will hound you lot for more advice!! lol

Here's a thought for you all: if you're remotely into wildlife then the Canon is the better bet at the bottom end. Canon do a very good 55-250 mm lens, the nearest Nikon equivalent is only 55-200 mm, which is nowhere near long enough for chasing wildlife (unless you're stalking elephants or rhinos, of course).

If your budget was higher, I would go for a 70-300 mm lens, in which case the Canon vs Nikon argument opens up again.

200mm is fine!but both lenses would be pointless for chasing wildlife static stuff would be fine and optically the 55-200mm nikon is as sharp as my 70-200mm on still objects!

Right, update.

Now, i have the choice, today to buy a 2nd hand, 2 week old Samsung NX10 for £320 or a brand new Sony A450 for £299.

The thing that i like about the NX10 is its size. Very compact but still useable like a mirror DSLR.

Which one guys?

what happened to the d3000 you were going for last week? Bet you don't buy a camera this week either

Took the words right out of my mouth

OP - choose one and get flipping taking pics! At the end of the day you have lots of opinions in this thread - but no one can decide for you.

Oh and if it was me, I would stick to Nikon, Canon or Sony for the future lens acquisitions you may make...

Been advised not to buy one. Old Tech apparently.

NX10 looks like a nice camera and also small too. As you can guess, still unsure what to get, that is why iam asking again and again.

Sorry to bore you all, guess you were never at the stage i am and were lucky enought to decide straight away.

If nobody wants to 'really' help then please feel free to close the thread.

Sorry to be a real 'noob' and ditherer. Thanks

Come off it you have 213 posts nearlly all of them asking about camera's or making offers on them and then backing out. decide soon and get on with enjoying the wonderfull world of photography, you really are missing out.

Look, you have not had one good word to say in my thread, thanks. Obviously you are an expert on cameras etc etc. I am not and need a lot of help to get started.

If you have no help then don't post. Simples.

Got to decide this week as i am on hols next week!

No I'm no expert, but when I wanted my first DSLR I went to Jessops handled what I could afford listened to advice given on each camera went home thought about it and went back the next day and bought the Sony a300, why because it felt right did what I then wanted it to do and was very happy with it.

exactly, when i bought my sony a300 i did a lot of research and narrowed it down to the d60, 450d and the a300 and then went to jessops had a handle and play and came out the shop with a sony a300.

at the end of the day a camera is a camera so just buy one, don't get a samsung nx 10 because its a completely different system and you'll soon sell it!

just go for the d3000 its a perfectly capable camera!

Thanks. I have been to Jessops to handle various models, got some ok advice though.

Is the Sony A450 a better buy than the D3000? A better camera? Asking as i can get a new one for £299 (A450)

This was my take on the situation when I had my Sony, to buy better glass I was looking at around £1500 for the 70-200 f2.8 Sony lens, when I looked further into it I could get a used Nikon D300 and a Sigma 70-200 f2.8 for the same money, GUESS WHAT I DID.
And now my pictures are way better

the a450 and d3000 are brilliant camera's but most people who opt for the a450 instead go for the a500/550.

have you considered a second hand sony a300, mine is invicible and i mean it, the other day (on friday) i dropped my a300 from six foot high onto the ground and it was still working perfectly not to mention the hundreds of bumps its gotten and nothing has affected it (touch wood).

Why choose the A300 over the A450 though? Any particular reason? I can get the A450 for £299, new.
