Can anybody tell me if there is any PHYSICAL difference between a camera bought in the UK from say, Jessops and one you might import from HK or similar??

Quality issues ect.. possible 'Copies' or general lower quality of build..

Thanks..

I heard that there are several places that Canon build their stuff.. i think one is in Asia somwhere and one is in the US.. im not 100% sure of this btw..

I also heard a while ago that there were Canon copies floating around, although this may be an urban myth..

Its just that im thinking about getting one in the near future so dont want to run the risk of getting something sub standard.. (Queue the Nikonians!) lol..

Right, as long as theres no difference in the actual product.. im sure id heard there was!! ..thats good news anyway..

Thanks..

No physical difference but a difference in warranty - Canon UK warranty does not cover camera bodies not imported into the UK by Canon.

Tom

Most canons I see for sale have an international warranty and advertised as covered internationally.

Personally spending all that money (as i nearly did on one and will be doing before winter) I would feel a lot happier with a UK warrenty.. just for my own peace of mind :)

addy on bit : i tried piece peice peace pease and they still dont look right.

Yes, the warrenty issue is on my mind too but it was the phyical difference (Or Just Quality Control) that i need advice over..

Iv seen other cameras with a worlwide MAC warrenty, so i'll be looking at getting one of those if i dont get a used UK one..

Regarding the warranty issue, Canon will give you an extra 12 month at the moment. But only if the camera is bought within the E.U.
Buying from HK does not qualify you to the 2 years.
Regarding spec. Some distributors will say that this is a grey market and try to put the frighteners on you to buy locally. But this is a load of tosh. The international warranty will be honoured by Canon. There is no difference in spec.

Ok, thanks for that.. i wasnt sure there was a difference or not..

possibly the only physical difference will be the mains plug for the battery charger in the box lol cant see any possible reason for them making 2 copies of the same body. There may well be different manufacturing plants though and quality control may not be so good at one or the other ?

one thing that springs to mind is DeWalt tools (drills, saws etc). The US models, although the same code, are half the price thanks to the $ but aren't CE marked, aren't servicable in the EU, and you are likely to be stung for import tax and VAT when bringing them in (all of which is applied on the total cost including shipping... in other words works out virtually the same cost and you get no warantee :(

Theres cars make almost exactly the same at the same plants.. Like the Ford Galaxy and the Seat Albuhera AND the VW Sharan, now im not going to pick out which but not all these cars are built to the same standard.. even though they use the same pannels!!

Now could it be a similar case with cameras.. but with different factorys.. the Asian ones using cheaper parts than the others??

Just a thought..

getting serious then.

Iv always hankered after the 1 series.. now i have a reason to have one!! lol..

Wifie cant argue now!! lol..

Hahaha.. the last 3 posts have made me smile!! i dont know whats happened but my fayfever has just gone nuts!! lol.. iv just been cheared up..

Iv just got to pluck up the courage to go and buy one now!!

Do whorehouse express do instalments?? lol..

Which model of the 1D are you looking for fraggle.
I have been looking at them recently, the 1Ds mklll. the cheapest I have found is £4175.95 From simply electronics. That's over £500 saving on most that I have seen.

One day when i can justify it...

Hey Frag - see here for info on the new 5D mk II (apparently), post #7 onwards

Now THATS what im after!! i think they nicked the idea from NIkon.. its going to be the D3X so iv heard!! :naughty:

you won't regret it at all! :D:D:D i love mine to bits, and would love to get a 1ds to go along with it, but the 5d will have to suffice for the time being..... not that that's a problem.

the supposed spec for the 5d mkII looks great, but doubt it's ever gonna be a 1 series camera. probably no weather sealing, or in-camera lens microadjustment:'(

I got my 1D Mk III from Dabs as it was only about £200 more expensive than an import and you always have the gamble over customs duty. It developed 2 faults and eventually Canon exchanged it. Was bad enough dealing with canon UK. I don't know what I would have done if it was a case of shipping it back to HK etc!

Last thing I bought from Dabs was a TV card, they denied having the cash and never sent it. Wouldn't ever send them any money of mine again :(

I bought mine from the local Jessops, means if anything goes wrong I can go and bang on their counter. Don't have to worry about delivery, waiting or any import duties etc.

Some things in life are worth paying the extra for :)

What I really would like to know is whether Canon.jp have now sorted out all the 1D Mk III issues, (real and/or perceived:shrug:)

UK prices are dropping daily (like everything else bar petrol at the moment !) - Mifsuds will do you one for £2355 currently.

I personally don't think its worth the risk of importing, because..

shipping costs
the risk of a fake (yes there are loads around, lenses, bodies etc etc)
you have no comeback on the seller under UK law (maybe under a credit card security ?)
you have limited warranty
you may have issues with service with Canon UK (they can't deny you under the international warranty, but may not prioritise any repair over EU examples)
the risk of import duty and VAT (not sure what percentage import duty is, but they add that, then the VAT !)

Mine is spot on, I understood the issue to only manifest itself in very specific circumstances too. I bought mine with confidence and have been happy with it ever since :)

And apparently it was also said that only a specific batch had hassles...

Thank goodness I do not have the money to buy everything I want...I would have learned a good few extra expensive lessons...

I suspect a lot of the problem was very specific, personally I've not had any probs with the Ds mk 3 and i love the various options on autofocus in terms of response etc.
Wish my 40D had them, I'll be tempted to a s/h one (1D mk 3) when the replacement comes out and the prices tumble as all the doomsters say they will.
Some of the comments I've seen here and elsewhere don't stand up to close scrutiny when the owners of the comments are questioned closely.

Sorry, meant to add the following on warranties.
1) Canon uk will honour a US purchased camera, although technically they don't have to, there is an unwritten agreement of reciprocity. I took mine in to Elstree and had no probs, even though I had a US receipt.

2) A Mac warranty starts from when the Canon warranty runs out, I took one out on mine and then realised that this was the case, but it didn't matter...see comment above.

Hope this helps.

George
