150-500 it's a monster!

I did the whole of last year's polo season with the 50-500 on a monopod + one tournament hand held! so a monopod will handle it fine. The 150-500 is 68 grams heavier than the 50-500 and a few centimeters longer.

Hello Marc, what monopod do you use?

I got the same lens a few days ago:) Now I need a bigger bag!:D
Couple of pics of it on my D300......

At 500mm with hood attached

150mm and no hood.

John

can anyone join in....?

Also with a D300. I use mine with the manfrotto hygrostatic head, makes it much easier than handholding it for a couple of hours.

some images taken with it here...

Now I know it's true what the say and that size DOES matter, but Good God, you'll have someone's eye out with those if you aren't careful!

Hi all, can anyone tell me if the Canon EF 1.4X II Extender will fit on to this lens please.

It does seem to produce very good pics for the price.

Thanks

Martin

I got one of these on saturday :woot: but have not had a chance to use it yet with the weather up here.

It states in the manual that it is compatible with both Sigma converters but you will lose autofocus. Can anyone confirm this?

OK, I'm a Nikon user rather than Canon but I have tried the 150-500 with a Teleplus 1.5x teleconverter and neither the D70 nor the D700 would AF the lens/coverter combo. I used to have the 170-500 Sigma (body focus rather than in-lens) and that DID AF on both bodies with the same teleconverter fitted. With both lenses, better results are had from cropping images from just the lens than using the converter (of course, the Teleplus isn't the best converter in the world which will have an effect!). As a Canon user, you may have problems trying to AF a lens/converter combo that reports as being slower than f/5.6 - a Canon user should be able to tell you.

Yes you are correct, it wont AF on my 30D/50D, it may on a 1 series.

But I still don't know if the Canon TC will fit this lens, I have a sneaky feeling it wont, it has a protruding element that needs to go into the lens barrel

As you say cropping may give an acceptable alliterative.

I recently brought the Sigma 150-500 and was at Wetlands in Barnes, London on Monday. This is one of the shots I got with the lens on a tripod.

It was really my first proper outing with the lens.

In reply to an email I sent to Sigma--

"Unfortunately these lenses are not tested on Canon Converters, but the lens is compatible with our converters, so we would presume it would be fine other than AF will not be available. We cannot guarantee this as I say because no testing has been done."

So still don't know for certain.

QUOTE.. Overall I'm very pleased with it for the money (got it from Bristol Cameras - cheapest I could find and their service was excellent)

John[/QUOTE]

I was about to ask on here if anyone had the Sigma 150-500/Nikon combination when I came across this post.

It seems that you missed the focus on the bird mate. The reeds right behind are tack sharp but the bird looks a bit OOF!

The lens looks nice. Those 500mm are really tempting. As for the size, I think it's quite handholdable. I too use the 120-300, which is near the 3kg mark and I use it handheld most of the time. The extra weight helps with camera shake aswell.

I brought one of these lenses about 2 weeks ago..........I hate it. Its been nothing but problems since day one, first of there was dust on the INSIDE of the outer glass now the focus ring is busted and it doesn't go back to 150mm. Its now in a box waiting for the courier to return it to the shop who have refunded my money. Apparantly they have had a few people return the lens after being very dissapointed with it.
