    Nikon macro?

Tamron 90mm. Pick a second hand one up for £200. Job done.

    Macro lens for D3100?

The Tamron 90mm is a great lens, I've had one for years, and it's well known as a pin sharp lens that competes well above it's price bracket. However be careful as there are two versions both with model number 272E. One with an auto-focus motor, one without. Obviously the one without won't...

Which compact to sit beside DSLR

Not from here, from another forum classifieds. Though I just noticed the XZ-1 is available for £202 delivered new from an amazon marketplace seller with good reviews. That's an awesome deal for a brand new one. I personally think the XZ-1 was rather ahead of it's time. The new one couldn't...

    £550 budget Sigma 70-200 2.8 mk2 & TC Vs Bigma (non OS)

Thanks for that, answered my questions. As I said, not got much experience in TCs.

    Filter advice

Hand hold a square then :-) That's what I've been doing for years despite having the mounting system which I rarely use. To get rich, deep blues in the sky and perfectly exposed ground a cheap ND grad will do wonders compared to an expensive polarising filter. Just my 2c.

    Filter advice

I'd personally look at square/rectangular filter kits. Then you can just buy a lens size adapter for a couple of quid and the filters will fit on any lens you have now or in the future rather than being limited to a single lens. The benefit of this system is that you can also use ND grads to...

Which compact to sit beside DSLR

I picked up a second hand one for £175, 6 months old, still under warranty. If I was limited to £200 I wouldn't hesitate to go second hand from a reputable source (i.e these forums, or another similar forums)

    What lens?

To be honest, as it's a new camera I had just assumed it was the 70-300 VR. If it's the old Nikon 70-300 then it's well known as one of the "worst Nikon lenses ever". Infact rumour has that it's made by Tamron, though that may not be true, and internet rumours run rife. Very soft at the long...

    £550 budget Sigma 70-200 2.8 mk2 & TC Vs Bigma (non OS)

Mike, just wondering why you advise against the 2 x TC with a f/2.8, but then recommend a 1.4 x TC with a f/4? Is it a particular issue you have with 2 x TCs? Just curious, as on paper it's much of a muchness. As I say, just curious, having never been a big user of TCs.

    What lens?

Well the 55-200 is totally redundant and inferior to the 70-300 in every way imaginable, so i'd say that's an easy loss. Is the 70-300 just not long enough? The Sigma 50-500 has been on the camera of many bird watchers for much of the last decade. It's not light, it's not pretty, it's not...

    Canon or Nikon

Take a photo with a Canon Take a photo with a Nikon Pick the one that has the best shutter sound to you. The Canon sounds like a mechanical super future robot taking a photo, and the Nikon makes a classic clu-clunk sound. Which one sounds better? This is about as relevant as 99% of the...
