Hi,

This is my first post and I am sorry if this question has been asked before. I currently have a Nikon D7000 with nikon 18 - 105 vr lens. I also have a nikon 55 - 200mm 1.4-5.6 and a nikon 70 - 300mm 1:4.5-5.6 lens. The main reason I will be using the camera is to photograph road racing(motorbikes). I may also start to use the camera for wildlife shots as well. I have the chance to buy a Sigma 50 - 500 lens at the moment and I was wondering what the views there are on which lens is best. Is the Sigma lens good for what I am talking about and do you think I should get rid of any of the others if I purchase it. It would be fair to say that I don't seem to ever have the 55 - 200 lens on the camera. I would greatly appreciate any thoughts

Paul

Well the 55-200 is totally redundant and inferior to the 70-300 in every way imaginable, so i'd say that's an easy loss.

Is the 70-300 just not long enough?

The Sigma 50-500 has been on the camera of many bird watchers for much of the last decade. It's not light, it's not pretty, it's not cheap and it's not particularly fast. But it certainly has it's fans... and importantly the reach.

If its the VR then correct, but if its the non VR then that is not a great lens.

To be honest, as it's a new camera I had just assumed it was the 70-300 VR.

If it's the old Nikon 70-300 then it's well known as one of the "worst Nikon lenses ever". Infact rumour has that it's made by Tamron, though that may not be true, and internet rumours run rife. Very soft at the long end. People who tell you the optics are good are lying, have a freakishly good sample, or have never used a good telephoto lens.

i say keep the 70-300 VR and sell the 55-200 to get the Bigma.

The Bigma is good and should cover the range you want to shoot and the 70-300 can be use for holiday/walk around when you don't want to carry that Bigma with you. It is heavy.

I'd say sell both and buy a secondhand 70-200 VR, you can always add a tc if you need a bit more reach.
