    Boat Race

Has anyone photographed the Cambridge vs Oxford boat race in London? I am planning to head down this weekend but not sure how seriously to take the photography as it looks incredibly busy from past photos I've seen. Initially I was planning to shoot with a 600mm lens from the bank or a bridge...

    Long(ish) Nikon telephoto

I'd go with the 70-200. It's a better lens than the others in the range it covers and that would (and did about 5 years ago) make the difference to me. I did also use with a 2x teleconverter and I'd say its just about usable but not ideal. 600 is nice but tbh it is far from essential for most...

    Nikon d800 - Sports settings

Focus tracking with lock on makes a huge difference in the number of keepers for sports. Not sure if it has already been mentioned. I don't have my camera on me right now but if I recall correctly your setting is for fast refocussing. This means if you focus on somebody and someone else walks in...

I just don't get lens prices.

Its all relative. The cost to develop a decent lens is huge and if you go into specialist/scientific areas the expensive consumer lenses suddenly seem very good value.

Beginner Nikon users - What is everyone's favourite lens and what do you use it most for?

70-200VRII for versatility, quality and price on full frame. Couldn't shoot everything with it though, so perhaps my 50mm f1.4D would be most useful. Both lenses are used for a bit of everything but mainly event photography

Decisions decisions, what camera and lens to use?

Take the Nikon and stick the other lens in your pocket ;) Or alternatively play around with street photography with the 35mm.

    gimbel advice

I'd agree that for the 200-500 you'd probably be better off with a decent ball head. I had the same debate a while back for a 600mm and went with the Wimberley which does a grand job, but it is overkill in my opinion for anything lighter than a 500mm or 200-400. Brands like Beike are cheaper...

    Nikon 18-200 VR1 / Nikon 18-200 VR11? re zoom creep

I have the VR1 and the zoom creep is not really an issue. It doesn't do it when zoomed out completely which means you can still keep it compact when walking about. It is quite a fragile lens though due to the long exposed zoom mechanism. Having lent it to people it has twice returned broken...

    RX600 with power pack

Thanks for the confirmation. The reason for doing this would be to be able to use the RX600 outside the studio rather than buy another system. An normal inverter seems to be the way forward but I think I'll just stick to speedlights for convenience despite the lack of modifiers I have for them...

    RX600 with power pack

Does anybody know if the Elinchrom Style RX600 can be powered by the Elinchrom classic 1500 power pack or any other Elinchrom pack with the rectangular EL socket as the main output? It seems to be a fairly logical thing to do but I'm struggling to find any options for converting the EL output to...

    Nikon SB5000 Radio Trigger

Aah that is a reasonable point!

    Nikon SB5000 Radio Trigger

Thanks Phil. I thought that might be the case! Why would you say the PocketWizards are a misguided choice? They seem to have worked well for me although I would prefer that the camera directly controlled the flashes using RF.

    Nikon SB5000 Radio Trigger

Hi, Does any know if the SB5000 speedlight can be triggered from a something like a pocketwizard mini TT1 to avoid having to purchase another PW FlexTT5? I get the impression this isn't possible but struggling to find a definitive answer!

Scotland Wildlife locations near Ullapool/Loch Broom

Handa also looks promising! Fifty miles isn't too bad. I was contemplating a trip to Cape Wrath as I've never been there, but I'm not sure if it is worth it. Handa looks more interesting at a glance.
