Yes
As far as I can see, the main difference between the two versions of this lens is a stop button on the VR11, and as it is approximately £100 more on used prices, is it worth paying the extra just to prevent zoom creep? I would appreciate any comments from owners of both versions, particularly on the issue of zoom creep. I carry my camera on a standard strap with the body hanging in the "normal" position as apposed to hanging lens down, would the zoom creep be much of an issue?

None of you owners of Nikon 18-200 VR1 have any comments about the issues of zoom creep? I don't want to spend an extra £100 for something that isn't really a problem. I watched a youtube video where the owner of a lens with the lock saying he had never used it as he hadn't experienced any problem with creep. As I understand it, the lock only fixes at 18mm, so once the lens is focused in towards the upper end doesn't it still have the same problem when shooting upwards? To say I am confused is an understatement.

not exactly the same, but ive got a 24-120 that creeps. I used a rubber band (like the £1.00 charity things) on the lens at a slight angle which stops this happening. beyond that i was under the impression that the only difference with the vr 1 and 2 is the lock switch and perhaps a lens coating. I remember reading somewhere that when Nikon put a VR2 it just means its the second lens of that model to have vr and not an updated vr system (thought i suppose both could be true on other lenses)

Most copies of both creep, just one has a switch to lock at 18mm. Of course that's no good if you are shooting downwards or upwards at any other focal length.

My 18-200 didn't creep at first, but then it lossened up.

You can use charity bands as mentioned or get a lensband that come in different colours.

Black one for example:

Thanks guys,
I have had a look at the lensband videos and although some look like the band has been put on at an angle, the ones where the band has been put on "square" look almost as if it's part of the lens so I think I'll get a VR1 version and save myself a hundred quid, because it sounds like I would still need a band with the VR11 version.
Thanks for the replies.

Pretty sure mine's a Mk I but doesn't seem to creep. It's on a V1 though, so start up isn't that speedy so I have plenty of time to wind it back in if it ever does creep out while being carried!

I think the main way to tell the difference is the VR is red on the first version and yellow on mark 2

I have the VR1 and the zoom creep is not really an issue. It doesn't do it when zoomed out completely which means you can still keep it compact when walking about. It is quite a fragile lens though due to the long exposed zoom mechanism. Having lent it to people it has twice returned broken. Good all round lens though and can focus ridiculously close at 200mm.
