    canon 40d

I'm really thinking about getting one of these as backup, does anybody know how the noise at 3200 compares with the 5D at the same ISO?

    Choice of subject matter

As above, get taking pictures. I saw myself as a landscape photographer but I ended up deriving just as much pleasure from shooting people. Don't snub any opportunities that may come along because you don't feel it's inline with your style - you might surprise yourself.

    moving away from auto

Firing off test shots is normal, I wouldn't worry about trying to evaluate the scene perfectly yourself. With experience you will need less test shots to get where you want but you still need that feedback loop.

    Review Billingham Hadley Pro Review

This is my review of the Hadley Pro I wrote on my blog a few weeks ago. I've reproduced it here best I can, but it's still a bit of a wall of text. You can find a more readable format here if you so wish: Billingham Hadley Pro Review :) The Hadley Pro is a premium camera bag from M...

    Cropping shapes

Yeah, it's something you'll get a feel for. Most of the time I stick with the 3:2 ratio but sometimes 4:3 is easier to find frames for.

    Problem with Canon EOS 500D

I think this is potentially the issue - the aperture setting of f/11 shouldn't affect the focusing.

    Canon L 70-200

As an F4 non-IS owner, this is perhaps the only lens I own where I sometimes wish I had IS. It's still a great lens though and I don't regret buying it.

    Cropping shapes

Do you mean height and width ratios when you say shapes or, quite literally, shapes? I'm assuming the former. Adobe Lightroom has a "lights out" cropping mode which blacks out the whole screen when you're cropping and it makes a bigger difference than you might think. The only other thing I...

    Canon speedlite 430 EX II

Just an FYI, with those Yongnuo triggers I have to drop it to 1/160.

    Gone from DSLR, what next?

I'd save up a bit more and get a m43 camera personally. £200 is only going to buy you an expensive compact.

Prime alternative to Canon 17-40 F4L?

The 17-40 is fine for what it is. Yes it is a bit soft in the corners but it depends how much of a stickler you are, and in the centre it's really quite good. Plus the 17-40 on the 7D makes a nice, albeit slow, general purpose zoom if you want backup options.

Want to upgrade my Camera - Canon 5D?

As far as I'm aware only the centre point on the 500D is cross type, whereas the 5D has 9. It's definitely subjectively better and I use them both. Plus you get the convenience of the joystick for AF point selection. :) The only thing I regularly feel "I wish was better" with the 5D is the ISO...

    Macro in raw

Definitely RAW. Sometimes my macro shots are so abstract I couldn't do without the flexibility in post.

    Canon 5d problem

That's my understanding also. I'm wondering whether to get mine fixed proactively as its bound to fail at the wrong time.

Want to upgrade my Camera - Canon 5D?

The 5D is a great camera. The AF is better than what you're used to on the 500D.
