I'm looking for a canon L 70-200 but not sure if. I should go for the IS or non IS version?

Are you going to get the f4.0 or the f2.8 version? This can have a bearing on your choice.

I have been debating on this, I'd like to use a teleconverter with the lens, if I got the F4 I could only use the 1.4x but if I got the f2.8 I could use the 2x.
I guess it comes down to budget aswell. I would be happy with either really, probably the F4 as its cheaper, do they do a non IS F2.8?

There is a non is f2.8.

It depends on what you want to shoot. If it's action with a high shutter speed go for the 2.8. If your planning on shooting less frantic stuff then the IS option may be better for you.

I've got the f4 non IS and have used it for both sport and wildlife in the right conditions

Thanks, have you tried a teleconverter on it?

Ive got a sigma150-500
I was after something a bit shorter for wildlife/nature.
Was just considering if I did need a little extra zoom that I could get a teleconverter.
I do most of my shooting handheld, do you think not having IS would be a problem?

I would say that most of the time your shooting would be at a fast enough shutter speed to negate the use of IS. I'm not sure why you want something shorter than your sigma for wildlife, usually you need more focal length.

That said, you can still get some decent images with a 70-200, the below pics were all taken with my zoom, no converter, just accept you'll not get too many short eared owl in flight shots!

You'll need to be very close though - check the reflection of the hide in the robins eye!

Nice shots . Thanks for the advise ! Will get the F4 non IS

Yep on both the 70-200mm f4 and 70-200mm f2.8 IS MKI and to be honest, wasn't overly impressed with the f2.8 performance with either TC, my 300mm f4 prime was way better. Don't get me wrong, on its own, its a fantastic lens, but its performance combined with a TC, more impressed with the f4 and 1.4x TC performance.

The 70-200mm f4 IS optically is supposed to be really good and combined with the newer generation IS is a good combo

If you had the money, the 70-200mm f2.8 IS MKII is the bee knees and reports say it works very well with the MKIII TCs, but that mega $$$$

Depends what your budget is and what you want to photograph

Looking at getting Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Telephoto Zoom Lens. Is a mk1/2/3 all compatible? Are there any differences ?
Thanks in advance for your helpful comments!
