Goodwood Festival of Speed - Tips for a Newbie

Thursday is mainly just normal road cars, friends got free tickets so it's a day to have a go at photography for me. I'm mostly going for the rally stage so anything else running up the hill is a bonus :) I'll certainly pop by, want to see if the interior of the Juke Nismo is as crazy (in a...

Goodwood Festival of Speed - Tips for a Newbie

Heading down to Goodwood FOS on Thursday, it'll be my first time doing any Motorsport photography so will be fun. Can anyone give me any recommendations of where to go/stand to get some good pictures of the cars coming up the track and/or rally stage? Any tips in general would be useful :)

    Abandoned or derelict places/ruins?

Worth checking out www.derelictplaces.co.uk, it's dedicated to this type of thing :)

    Thoughts on the Manfrotto MKC3-PO2?

Looking for something small and cheap to take down mines/caves for long exposure light painting. It's got to fit inside a backpack so less than 50cm (ideally closer to 40cm) when folded and likely to get very dirty with mud/grit, so I don't want something expensive. Will be holding a 30D...

    Spec me a bag!

The Kata 3N1 series is worth a shot if you want a bag that can carry more than just you camera gear, and have an optional tripod holder also. The larger models also have room for a laptop. http://www.kata-bags.com/Bag+Families/3N1+Family/3N1+Family/15524933 I use the 3N1 as my 'city bag'...

    Canon 17-55mm f2.8 v Sigma 17-50mm f2.8

    The front on the cheap 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 rotates, the 17-55 f2.8 doesn't :)

    wide angle lens for 7d

Another happy Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM owner here, great UWA lens.. even though you do look a bit strange taking a photo 2ft away from a person!

Equipment left in the cold. What to do?

A week seems like overkill unless you've been outside shooting in the extreme cold?

    Quick Release Straps

Optech Pro Strap very comfortable to use and has clips so it can be released. Not had mine very long but I've not seen any comments on the various reviews/forums I've read about them coming undone unexpectedly...

Equipment left in the cold. What to do?

Keep it in its bag and bring it indoors, leave it to warm up during the evening and you'll be fine, so long as you don't immediately take the lens off you won't damage anything with condensation.

    Help Needed Canon 550d

Hope you haven't tried to touch/clean the sensor as those look like grease marks :(

    best slr for beginner

That and the Canon 1100D. I'd suggest going into a high street shop and actually holding both, they are different shapes and some people prefer one to the other.

How do camera insurance companies deal with replacing discontinued bodies?

Good to know that, I'd not want a 60D to replace my 50D if it dies a painful death.
