I have this lens and although I can't speak from experience, I seriously doubt it will be ideal for motorsport as it is slow focusing. I tried it on a few cars passing at 30-40km in the street and it was very hit and miss.

That's a good point about the weight of the 28-300, I didn't consider it. Actually it might be a pain for the missis to lug it around. As a tester I'll stick the 24-70 on the D80 and ask her if she would really want to carry something of similar size and weight around. TA.

Do you format your cards regularly? It's a good habit to get into.

I can vouch for the 18-70. It's a decent lens, it focuses fast on a D80, it's a sharp and has given me some really good results. I can't help you with how it compares to the 18-55for focusing speed, but considering the 2nd hand prices I'd say it's a good buy for that little extra reach...

My first dslr and now my back-up. It's a cracking bit of kit and possibly a better entry level buy (going on 2nd hand price) than many of the newer Nikon entry level dslrs.
