    Press passes

I went to see Gary Moore last year. I did not take my camera because i did not want it confiscted. However I had a chat with the head of security and he told me that usually as long as the artist agreed then you could nominate two songs from the set and security allowed you to enter the front of...

This may seem a strange question but were you near a transmitter / phone mast or radar. With my 20d i was photgraphing military aircraft with about 7 other photographers and as the aircraft turned towards us all the Canon uses shouted b****r i have just got a err99. The conclusion we all came...

    300 f4 IS L vs 400 f5.6 L

Matt 300mm f4 then use a 1.4 converter and you have a 420mm f5.6. Depends what you want to shoot. The 300mm F4 is a real gem.

    Telephoto thats sharp?

HJ Just to put a different slant on things it is also about your technique and doing eveything you can to capture a sharp image at source. Put your lens on a tripod and compare the results to those hand held. Keep the speed up at the long end of your zoom. consider using a monopod. For sure...

Converting 35mm slides to digital files

Like John-oh said be prepared for some long nights. I have a Scanwit 2720S which is now quite a few years old. I does a good job using the Vuescan software but boy does it take forever. To give you a feel for the amount of time you need from slide scan to finished, cleaned printable picture I...

Any problems taking an SLR on a plane as hand luggage?

The only problems I have encountered have been in the USA where I was asked where the receipts for all my kit were. I guess they thought I was importing it. It was off to a side room and I had to do a bit of explaining. Other than a very good search of my bag I have never encountered any...

Anyone own an original EOS 1D?

My 2p worth. I agonised long and hard over my recent purchase 1DMk3 what with all the recall issues etc. But compared to the 20D it is awsome. I still like the 20D and use it as a backup. With the BG2 grip and two genuine canon batteries i have shot over 1300 frames. As with the MK2N the MK3 is...

    First filters?

No reason you cant just hold it over the front of the lens especially if you go for the "Cokin P Type" (they are bigger). Use a grad if you want to balance the sky / land exposure or solid if you want to reduce the overall exposure value. (moving water).

    I'm sorry... another tripod thread

A good choice I would say. However try the manfrotto Tipod chooser link below. http://www.manfrotto.com/Jahia/site/manfrotto You may have to download an active X to get it to work but it will give you a good idea for your needs. My tip is watch the weight of your kit especially with your...

    First filters?

Jaykay. If you are post processing in Photoshop the only filters you reall need are a Circular Polariser and One or two ND's. They are available in the Cokin range and go from ND2 to ND8 and can be solid or graduated. Use a screw in UV mainly to protect you lens from damage. Try this link...
