I am by no means an expert but perhaps do a google on Triangle of exposure, there is loads of useful stuff.
To retain iso on low light you'll need to either (or both) increase aperture, lower f number, or decrease shutter speed. Increasing apeture will decrease your depth of field.

Yes, but you'll need a compatible wireless trigger/receiver of sorts.
Yongnuo make one but there are others out there.

There is some truth to it.
Prices of memory spiked after the floods in taiwan last year and supplies were again impacted by floods this year. Prices actually have gone up, or stopped falling in real terms.
Don't think there'll be a major shift in pricing unless there is another supply shock.:)
Wind is the main consideration, deer feed into the wind so if you do get downwind you can get quite close.
If it's woodland deer you're after you could try a high seat.
Don't wear noisy clothes; also worth pointing out deer are colour blind but can spot contrast and movement very well.
A sadder story would have been the lion getting shot by a ranger while this chap placed his camera. If there wasn't a ranger handy, more fool the photographer....
Approaching a fresh kill on foot is not the smartest thing.
Realistically I am unlikely to move to full frame, as I said in the original post it's at the back of my mind but not a real consideration.
This lens is really intended to replace the kit lens which is pants tbh, even compared to the nifty 50 and nifty 250mm.

Is that because of the metal barrel on the 24, rather than the plastic on the 17?
Watching the DigitalRev review (entertaining) it cites the glass on the 17-55 is L grade.
It's a good opportunity so I'll ponder on it a little.

I have an opportunity to get one either the EF-S 17-55mm or the EF 24-105mm F4L at a good price.
The camera is 600d so a crop sensor; I'm not to clear on whether the 17mm and 24mm bottom end is actually a direct comparison - may be a dumb question but are the focal lengths on the EFS...
