My wife has just started playing around with my old 400d with the 18-55 kit lens on and has decided she wants a bit more reach but doesnt want to spend a lot of money in case she doesn't stick with it so I was looking at either a canon ef 75-300 f4.0-5.6 or a sigma 70-300 f4.0-5.6 DG macro.both can be bought for around £100-£120 ish and I was just wondering if anybody had any experience with either of these lenses.

im using the sigma 70-300mm and have had no concerns..... yes its not as good as the L lens but i dont expect it to be... mainly because i havent spent 5 times as much on the lens in the first place

Another vote for the Canon 55-250 IS lens. It's a very good lens for the money and fits in nicely with the 18-55 lens.

I would avoid the Canon EF 75-300. Either go for the the Canon EFS 55-250 IS, the Canon EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS or the sigma

The 55-250 is a cracker! It's all I use at the moment!
If your going to go down the 70-300 route then you should look at the tamron vc version it gets very good reviews!!

Another. Vote for the 55-250! Tested it at the weekend at Manchester airport and it performed very well
