According to Nikon it is compatible with the ML-L3 wireless remote which does not support bulb mode (its basically for taking a picture with you in it) and the MC-DC2 wired remote which allow bulb-mode.
If you are looking to eliminate camera shake when using a tripod I would go for the wired...
My 18-70 f3.5-4.5 DX kit lens that came with my D70 is definitely NOT weatherproof - it steamed up inside on a very rainy morning at Exbury Gardens last year.

I've been to a couple of local butterfly houses with my camera. The only trouble I had was with the front element and the viewfinder misting up. As others have said though once the camera has warmed up its ok. I didn't change lenses inside the butterfly house though as I didn't want the extra...
