u will be fine with 300. i was there couple of weeks back and shot a lot at 500mm on my sigma 170-500mm but it was a bit soft (as ever) and used my 70-200mm to good effect.
in places where the gannets are getting grass from the edge they are defs close enough to get some nice ones at 300...
i own the tamron 17-50 2.8 and its great. its my walkabout lens on days out etc.
i'm sure you can pick one up s/h for a reasonable price (~£200 ish) could be a better financial option

i'm completely split being honest. 75% of the time i'm now shooting in a group, leeds has a very active bunch and there are in the region of 3-5 events every month. these meet ups range from 'exposure leeds' which is an organised session...
i'm going to cry!
