I know that sharpening is always the last thing to do in post processing, but when is it best to carry out any noise reduction should it be necessary?

Good link. Can't remember if I learned to use that sequence from people who taught me or through finding it that works - but it works! I'd say most important is to sharpen last, and always have a back-up copy for the times you cock it up.
