    Gobos hit the 21st century

Its a bit like the 80's front projection system with no model lamp or fancy screen that made it all work. the problem with it as i see it is somebody in China is already making a cheap version of it as it is only a slide holder on a lens mount, no optics, electronics, so the us makers will have...

Backdrop/background system, what was it called?

You will have to cover the top rubber foot of the autopole with a sock or something similar to stop a nice black ring being placed on the white ceiling. autopoles are great for solving all sorts of support problems. by the time you have bought 2 with 2 superclamps and the paper expan system cost...

    How much light?

Theatre lighting guys talk a different language from us. the light output from the spotlights is normally expressed as lux or lumins, a 650 watt fresnel spot may give out 3000 lumins, this is not a lot of light when its 20 foot away from a stage. in small stages, say schools or villages halls...

    Studio Strobe Sync Speed considerations

most modern studio flash units i see in my workshop will fire with very poor camera contacts and conections. 30 years ago you needed good sync leads for it all to work 100%. Things have improved and now the latest bowens flash will fire with 5000 ohms across the jack socket, thats about 20...

Anyone tried a Walimex Optical snoot?

These sort of spots were all the rage years ago, we used to make some to fit bowens flash. the big problem is the heat as you need the model lamp on full to see whats going on and the heat produced is a major drawback. the range of rosco gobo's is vast over 900 types all for around £ 6.00 each...

    Studio Floor Paint

TV studios use a plastic undercoat first and after about 15 layers of paint you can peel off the undercoat taking the white paint as well leaving an almost new floor behind. this stops the 100's of coats of paint on top of the floor making it a poor surface for cameras to move around, used to be...

Damn - after 2 yrs and 2 months one of my Bowens heads is not happy

The missfire bleep is often a worn out flash tube, they are user replaceable, you could have swopped the tube from the working head to try out, flash tube wont be covered by the warranty.
