When you add the battery door, there is a little switch that must be depressed when the door is closed for it work. If when putting the door on, you don't catch this right, the camera wont come on. Hope this helps.

The Sigma 50-500 is excellent for cost and usability.

You could try changing the review value to say "4", before doing a full reset (if you have any personal settings). See if that works and then change back to "2".

As long as you set their expectations - then there should be no problem. Better kit is always, well, better... if you either have or can afford to get it. Its got to be better than no photographs of their special day - surely? Similar situation over here - wifes family, (cousin), no money...
