hi all just wondering on peoples opinions on the sigma 120-400, 150-500 and the canon 100-400,(or any others) is there any great difference between them? i know for iq the 400 prime is probably better but at that range i feel a fixed focal wouldn't be versatile enough

Look up some of the work produced by Lez325 on the forum. He uses the Sigma 150-500, and captures some stunning shots. I was encouraged by his photos, to buy one myself, but haven't had a chance to go out and give it a good workout.

The 100-400 everyday. It's such a good lens I have two. Versatile, sharp and great value especially if you buy second hand.

Thank you Rob :D

I use the Sigma 150-500mm for all sorts of Photography, its such a versatile lens Birds,Wildlife and even Macro shots

Check out myFlickr ( below = for some examples)

I would highly recommend this lens

I've got a Sigma 150-500 OS and I've also got use of the wifes Sigma 120-400 OS and I highly recommend both of them. I did have a Canon 100-400 L when I got the 150-500 and after selling a body 1 of them became redundant. After lots of testing for IQ, IS/OS, failing light towards evening etc. I ended up selling the 100-400 (that was something I never envisioned doing when I'd just got the 100-400 as it was a teriffic lens).

The 150-500 is my 'go to' lens for airshow and wildlife and when coupled to my 5D3 it's an excellent lens overall. You can find lots of shots with it on my Flickr page and there's a few taken using a 60D. There's at least one 'bird shot' taken with the wifes 120-400 and I found that to be just as good for IQ and only very slightly slower to AF but it does handle failing light better due to it's f5.6 aperture as opposed to the f6.3 of the 150-500. Really the only difference is the range of 400 instead on 500 but on a 60D the 400 will give you a perceived 640mm, the only reason I stick with the 500 is that I use it on my 5D3 so I eeded maximum reach.

Either one of the lenses mentioned by the OP will give you great IQ on the 60D, or any other camera TBH, and your preference should be made on budget but keep the weight of the lens in mind when choosing. The 150-500 is quite a lump and the others aren't flyweight either but I can manage the gripped 5D3 and 150-500 all day handheld without any problems. Hope this helps.

very helpful thank you,i was leaning toward the 150-500 but 400mm would be enough for me and as you say its 640mm on a 60d and as its a little smaller now leaning that way at the moment:thumbs::lol::thumbs:

I decided on the 150-500 because I mainly shoot wildlife photography and wanted that extra bit of range. The image quality is great and tbh I don't have an issue with the AF, I do tend to stop down to F8 though and keep it there as this seems to be the sweet spot for my lens. Get yourself into a store and try them, I found that there didn't feel to much difference in weight between this and the 120-400. I would recommend budgeting for a sling strap too as it makes it a lot easier and more comfortable to carry. It just hangs by you side until you need it. Be prepared for daft jokes though. One I had when I was at an airshow was "I bet you can get into the cockpit with that", my response was "no I use a ladder for that!" 😄

I have got the 120-400mm and I have been very please with it. Please look at some of my previous post's or my flickr account for some examples of what it is capable of taking.

Would have liked the 100-400mm Canon but the price and the fact that it is quite an old design put me off. About time Canon introduced a replacement.
