The picture was taken in the living room with off camera flash to the left of camera. The background is the living room wall (a dark red) that has been burnt to black in photoshop.

I was in a similar situation a month ago and also new this photography lark (now well and truly hooked). I looked round plenty of pro sites for ideas and read up alot on here. You are doing the best thing by asking everyone is helpful on here, I have gained more from here than the local library...

had a similar issue a while ago, turned out my psu was on the way out and not supplying enough juice to fully power the system. Do you have anything running off the psu you can disconnect to allow more power. This could help rule out power issues.

You can adjust the force needed to move the camera depending on weight of equipment and lens etc. using the small knob. I adjust mine so i only need a quarter turn on the main knob to allow me to readjust. Have fun with it, i have the same head quality at an affordable price.
