Hi All

I'm new to the site and have joined in the hope of gaining some knowledge from the much more experienced photographers out there! I'm a novice and at present enjoy taking basic snaps with my SLR camera on auto (sorry), although I've now started using the aperture and other manual controls to find out more about what the camera can do.

My friends are always impressed with my pictures (well they say this to my face :o) and my pregnant friend has asked me to take some pictures of her and her partner.

I haven't got a photography studio or even any basic pieces of kit (apart from my camera!) and was wondering how to stop shadows appearing on pictures if I just take a shot against a white wall? Is this something to do with the light from the windows or do I need another flash for the camera?

Also has anyone taken any of these sort of pictures before? I was wondering what clothing works best with the bump?

Any other help anyone could give me would be much appreciated as I'm pretty nervous about it and want to take some fantastic photos for her.

Thanks

You will get shadows if you use the built in flash, or a flashgun pointed at the subject.

You need to used bounced flash (flash pointing at ceiling) for you to avoid shadows.

Don't use flash. Light from a big window with no direct sunlight. Big reflector (eg a white sheet) to fill in the shadows. Simple background. Lovely. You don't need anything else.

Shoot in colour, but conversion to black & white in post processing might be very nice. Shoot Raw to maximise post processing options.

It's all about the bump. Nude. It's got to be nude. Or at least as close to it as you can get.

I was in a similar situation a month ago and also new this photography lark (now well and truly hooked). I looked round plenty of pro sites for ideas and read up alot on here. You are doing the best thing by asking everyone is helpful on here, I have gained more from here than the local library. Anyway here is the outcome of my attempts, quite a bit of post processing but it may give you some inspiration and another use for a white sheet!

Good luck and keep clicking.

Try not to make her look fat? :p

Good question though, I know between 15-20 girls who are pregnant and another 5 that have given birth recently!

Time to get the baby shots in I think :D

The picture was taken in the living room with off camera flash to the left of camera. The background is the living room wall (a dark red) that has been burnt to black in photoshop.
