I've got the VR 70-300mm lens and it is in a word AWESOME, personally that's the difference in price for me, the quality versus the technology. If it comes down to purely price, then you will always end up with the non-VR, but I occasionally use the VR function and thought the image sharpness...

I've used the 70-300mm for plenty of "moving" shots and it's never let me down. Even with it's hefty price tag I've never felt short changed...

One spare would definitely be enough. I've done full days at motorsports events taking 600-700 shots in a day and the battery meter is still showing 60% in reserve at the end of the day. It won't be until I head out to the US later this year when I will be doing serious amounts of shooting...
