hi all I'm looking for a zoom lens I have just purchased a canon 600d and all I have at the minute is the std 18 55mm but I need something more I'm looking to do a bit of motorsport and nature what would ppl recommend I only got a budget of about £100 I know it's not much so obviously not looking new but it's all a mind field to me not sure what I'm looking at

I would try for a used Canon 50-250mm with that budget, a decent lens for the money.

something along the lines of canon 55-250mm STM or even 100-300mm USM (which is my cheapo telezoom)

What's the 100 300 like is it quick focus? sharpness? light?

Its certainly light. I used to own the 55-250mm STM also and I'd pick that over the 100-300mm. The 55-250mm also has IS.
The only reason I personally shoot 100-300mm is because I use FF and my body has stabilization so lack of IS doesn't bother me much (And also because my colleague sold me this lens for £15 :D ).

The focussing speed is fine. Nothing spectacular but not bad either. The 55-250mm STM was faster to focus.

EF 100-300 4.5/5.6 USM second hand if you can get one, read ken Rockwell's writeup
Or 70-210 3.5/4.5 USM from the same period is another terrific lens for the money.
Matt

I'll put in another vote for the 55-250 STM or the 100-300 USM for that budget - I used the 100-300 USM for a while, sold it when I upgraded, then ended up buying another one to keep around as it's just a really handy light little zoom which is surprisingly sharp if you can stop it down just a smidge. Focus is reasonably nippy, although nowhere near blinding fast.
