I got a Sigma 70-300mm macro lens today to play with and i couldnt find out how zoom in small things like incects or really small things.. had to hold the camera about 3 ft away from the item i wanted to make picture of and from that distance you cant get close enough if you get me ...

How to make it happen ?

Thank you.

As far as i remember there was only 2 switches, AF on/off and macro switch ...
Tried everything but as im rookie as 3y old baby i coulnd find out how to make it happen :p

Sig 70-300 has a minimum focus distance of 95cm, which means that the subject needs to be 95cm from the sensor. Try getting it in focus then slowly zoom to 300. Swap to just the center AF point. The macro ratio of 1:2 then means that every 2mm of the subject on the sensor is 1mm of the actual subject, so 50% of its actual size.

If you want to magnify even more you'll need some extension tubes.

My 70-200 'macro' can only focus from 1m away.

You are never going to get the same effect or close-up ability of a real macro lens.

is it a 1:2 macro? most are with the 70-300mm like the Tamron etc.....so you wont feel like you are as close as you would with a 100mm 1:1 for example.

TBH, its not a macro in the true sense of the word, about 3ft is probably about right and you will struggle to fill the frame with something like an insect or small flower. As long as the macro switch is turned on and you were at the limit of its minimal focal distance, then that really is as close as it will get - I dont recall ever getting much closer than that with mine, maybe 2ft from front element, whcih is probably close to 3ft from focal plain. :(

Well, either that, Or I was doing it all wrong too

Doesn't the macro on this lens only work in certain zoom positions? I had one for a while and the switch wouldn't move to the macro position if the zoom wasn't set right.

That "happened" to me as well :bang: :D

Getting the macro switch to work (finding the gate) is a bit frustrating, however at around £150, the APO version is not a bad lens . . .

If you want to do pucker Macro work then you won't go wrong with either of the following lenses, the first one being reputed to being one of the sharpest about. I've had both and can highly recomend them, plus used prices on here and the likes of eBay won't break the bank

1. Sigma 70mm f/2.8

2. Sigma 105mm f/2.8

The Sigma 70-300mm may be called a "macro" lens but it almost certainly isn't really a true macro lens and all they probably mean is that it will focus a little closer than you'd probably expect a standard lens of this type to focus.

Just to show the focus distance, the 70-300mm has a minimum focus distance of 95cm, they don't do a 300mm macro but their 150mm "macro" will focus at 38cm.
