Hello, I would like to pick your brains if that is ok?

I currently have a Canon 50d and use a 70-300mm f4/5.6 USM (latest version)

I am thinking that maybe I could do with a lens with a bit more reach. Now I will be looking at the second hand marketas funds do not allow a new lens. Any suggestions?

I was thinking about the Sigma 120-400mm lens. Would this be any good?

I have seen a couple go for quite reasonable (compared with new) prices

I have the Sigma 50-500 (bought brand new last weekend) and is very good. Heard good things about the Sigma 150-500 as well. There is one for sale in classifieds just now I think.

The Sigma 120-400 OS is as good IQ as the 150-500 OS. I've got a 150-500 and the wife has a 120-400 that I occasionally borrow on occasions. The OS system is excellent, much better than the IS on a Canon 100-400 L and the IQ is very similar to the 100-400 too.

This is from the 150-500, 1/800sec at ISO1000 and f6.3 (wide open) using a 5D3. It's SOOC and only PP is a crop.

And this is taken with my 5D3 and the wifes Sigma 120-400 OS at 1/800sec, ISO 160, f6.3 at 400mm. This is a Jpeg SOOC with no PP other than a crop.

I was previously using Tamron 70-300 VC and switched to Sigma 120-400 last year with quite a good deal.

T70-300 is sharper than my copy of S120-400 at all focal length and aperture. But then, S120-400 is still sharp starting at f8 with my 40D, so I am still happy with my purchase. I mostly shoot motorsports with this lens.

Sample shots I got from the lens

Thanks for all your comments. I think I will aim for either the 50-500mm or the 150-500mm Sigma as invariably if I get the 120-400mm I would want to go longer still!

Now the question is which one of the two is the better lens?
