I have started an interest in zoom photography.

1, i can stay put, with out wheeling about tiring on the arms
2, i have some great shot with my sigma 28-300mm and would like to expand.
3, i would want a teleconverter as well, but i would require all the functions to work on a Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 L IS USM Lens would i lose any functions like IS or AF.

4, i know the lens is good can anyone recommend a equal in say sigma or tamron <<<spelling???

Regards Mark.

OK you have a canon 400D, which is a small sensor camera.

To use a teleconvertor with your camera, the lens would need to be f4 or faster to work with a 1.4x TC and f2.8 or faster for a 2x TC to work and have full functionality, otherwise you would only be able to manual focus the lens.

Canon 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 about £800-1000. Equivalent lenses for less budget, only one that really meets the criteria is the sigma 100-300mm f4 about £650-750. There is the sigma 80-400mm f4-5.6 which is about £800, but slower autofocusing than the 100-400mm.

sigma 100-300mm f4 you can use 1.4x TC with full autofocus but only manual focus on your camera with 2x TC.
sigma 80-400mm f4-5.6 use TC's but only manual focus on your camera
canon 100-400 f4.5-5.6 use TC's but only manual focus on your camera

otherwise you'll need to save a few more penny's

Wow :clap:i think that will do for now just chowing down to a take out many thanks for that i will digest the take out and this information.

Kind Regards Mark.

Haven,t used a tele con myself ,but a few guys on other site say it,s a loss of image quality on the 2x and 1.4 x the reasonable option.

But a couple say to just crop the image and results are better.

But as said, I don,t have one....

What do you want to take photograph's of is probably an important question as well and do you need a longer zoom or faster lens?

Hi and good morning, i would use it for Air shows both at fairford , and go down to RAF Vally or anything else i can not move fast enough to take a picture, i am usually left i one spot, because of terrain in some parks while the kids play,i took a couple of shots of some birds in flight so mybe a prime would do/fast pin sharp and able to AF, so it was two options. i have a 28mm-300mm but with out OS ,IS i get shake at full zoom, i will try the lens with my monopod to see if that makes a differance.

1, a Zoom
