This is a group project where all participants make a zine, then exchange it with everyone else taking part. No money changes hands.

All participants agree to send their zine to all other participants at their own cost. What you produce and how, is up to you.

As a shortened form of the word fanzine with its origins in the 1930s, a zine is a short run, small format publication - a DIY self-published work with a limited circulation. For this challenge, it is a collection of your photos edited together into a magazine or booklet format. You can either print the zine yourself, have it photocopied or you can send it off to a printing service.

You don't need to decide right now; there will hopefully be some who are committed to this so watch this thread, ask questions and start pulling together the content you might want to include in your zine. Then, when you are comfortable with that let us know.

Timeline:
1) July - November 2025
: You come up with an idea, take pictures and design your zine. You can even build it in your chosen software.
2) Saturday 25th October 2025: I will be asking people to formally commit to making their zine. You will have until midnight on Friday 31st October 2025 to PM me your name & address to confirm your commitment.
3) Saturday 1st November 2025: I will send out a PM to all confirmed participants with everyone's name & address as well as the confirmed amount of zines people need to print.
4) November 2025: To avoid the Christmas hustle and bustle, everyone gets the appropriate number of zines printed and mails them out to everyone on the list by the end of November 2025.

FAQ:
Q: Can anyone take part?
A: The exchange is open to contributing members here at Talk Photography. If you found out about this from somewhere else, you're very welcome to join in.

Q: I don't live in the UK; can I take part?
A: Yes. However, it will be OPTIONAL for people to mail zines to you mainly because of the high costs of postage involved.

Q: How much will it all cost?
A: A box of 25-30 zines, for example from Mixam delivered, costs around £50. Then there's the postage for each person taking part. Previous zine exchanges have been in the region of 6-10 participants. Read through the thread to get an idea of roughly how many are taking part. Postage costs vary, but sending an A5 zine with Royal Mail 2nd Class - Large letter size over 100g costs around £2.00 - £2.50, as of April 2025 prices.

Q: How many zines will I have to send?
A: We'll monitor how many people show interest. Sending out 10-20 zines will be expensive. You can leave it until midnight on Friday 31st October 2025 before committing to the point of spending any money, so you can make a decision then.

Q: How should I design it?
A: Images can be in colour, monochrome or a mix, with or without text. Square, landscape or portrait, or a mix. They can be sequenced one image to a page, or one image to a spread or maybe collages.

Q: How big should I make it?
A: As a minimum, A5 size, containing between 10-15 pages. Participants have also produced square (210 x 210mm) and A4 size zines. Remember, you need to pay for it and post it, so the bigger or heavier the zine, the more expensive it will be.

Q: What should the zine contain?
A: Zines are about creativity, play, experimentation and independence. They can be produced around a theme or a project. It is entirely up to you. You can use film, digital, phone or pinhole - it doesn't matter.

Q: What software do I need to make a zine?
A: Affinity Publisher seems to be a favourite as it has a relatively easy learning curve and is sometimes available at a discount. Other programs are available. Please ask in the thread if you're not sure.

I think I might be in too, the deadline of 30th Nov isn't too bad as I'll be back off my holidays by then with a week or two to spare :)

Yes, I'm in for this one.

I will say yeas with all good intention and hopefully nothing goes wrong this time.

Eight so far. This is good!

Erm, can someone just remind me, after you hit the submit button to whichever publisher you've used (Maxim I guess for the most people), How long does it take for them to pop through the door.. usually.

Hi all. It's been a whiIe. I hope everyone else is plugging away at their zine :)

I was just finishing a few photos ready for a test print at Mixam, Which was the best colour profile to use again? CMYK for sure but - am I supposed to choose FOGRA39 or GRACoL2006_Coated1v2? Is one used for UK, one for US by any chance?

Just bought a new Epson printer with one of those tanks, sick to death of my old printer demanding black ink everytime I looked at it.

I was going to splash out On Affinity Publisher too but seem to have managed okay with Photoshop, several page templates have now been made ready to drop photos in.

Not sure where you're located, but having checked the US website they recommend GRACol2006_Coated1v2 as does the UK site

@John Barry. Thank you, I'm UK based - I had a feeling it would be GRACol2006_Coated1v2 but I'm sure I saw FOGRA39 mentioned on here.
I'll go with the one they recommend. Hopefully put an order in over the weekend :)

Yes, plugging away! I'll be giving a gentle nudge around the 25th Sept, as it will then only be four weeks to decision time!

I may have just sent away for my first little zine test. I've got a really bad headache, you don't think the Mixam interface cause this by any chance?

Before my new printer arrived a few days ago, I thought I would use up the ink in my old Epson XP4155. I printed a high quality map that I needed for my zine, It was supposed to be a dirty yellow in colour, but it came out too dark. I do remember a few people mentioning my monitor would maybe show a brighter image than what my printer would output, but I was a bit disappointed since I checked all the settings in Photoshop - CMYK, GRACol2006 etc.
I went back to the image and added a little brightness, just 10% and re saved, ready to try again with my new printer (Epson ET2861). Did the reprint, But it came out way too bright lol. So I loaded up the original map what should print out too dark, it didn't, that too is too light :( Damn. I gotta say though, on the lighter print, the map text is super sharp

So I'm just waiting for this little zine from Mixam to be delivered, next Thursday I think.

Hi all, this is a gentle reminder that we are now only four weeks away from decision week starting 25th October.

When does everyone start to panic? :)

I got my little test zine back from Mixam. I'm in two minds about it. The map I was originally worried about is absolutely fine. Photos? Maybe a bit of brightness needed as a couple of people already noted.

I might be being picky but, some of my full page photos with small borders aren't that straight, did this happen with anyone else? Did it bother you? Also, on a few pages, eg 4 & 13 - I could see a little of page 13 on page 4. I guess if the booklet had a lot more pages (it will), then this extra info on page 4 would hopefully disappear into the gutter?

My zine making decision will need to be made on the 18th - just incase I can't get internet where I'm going :)

Not sure if anyone is interested but two upcoming zine/book events in Bradford:

Bradford Zine Fair 2025 will be on Saturday 27th September 2025 at City Library, 11:00-16:00.
and
Photobook Fair 2025 will be on Saturday 4th October at Impression Gallery, Bradford. 10:30-17:00. Free entry.

I might try to attend one

This is one of the primary reasons I gave up with Mixam. One of my last print runs was out by +/- 8mm across the spread & was re-printed in total. If your order is produced by the Swindon company they use you can almost be certain the images won't be straight. They don't appear to have even the most basic quality control

I attended last year's Zine Fair. I sold about three copies of my zine.

It was worth visiting though, and I'd go again this year if I didn't have clashing plans

@John Barry. It did indeed come from Swindon John, I just did one copy. I remember towards the end of ordering online, they did warn about small test zines being possibly printed on different printers than normal orders and not compare quality between tests, so I don't know. I will do another test just before I go on holiday, If I'm happy with it, when I come back, I'll send for the final zines. If I'm not happy, I won't really have time to do any more tests, so I'll have to take a risk and go with.... xyz? Print.Work? Have your other zines been okay, the ones NOT done with Mixam?

@FishyFish. I'm just back, long day! that 1+hr bus ride with 3 million stops, God, I just wanted to get off and walk! I didn't take much money with me but I bought a few small A5 zines. I wanted a look at those ones made from one sheet of paper. There wasn't really anything photography related, I think the best item I bought was a tote bag with the fair name wrote on it. I'm glad I got to it though, not sure if I can visit to the other one next week :)

I've been fortunate in finding a local printer who has proved very satisfactory & will be used for the current swap. I had some good conversations with ExWhyZed although I never used them. I have also seen positive reviews of Print Evolved who I believe Mixam used for one of my other orders. They will accept direct orders

A worthwhile outlet for selling zines is the excellent Good Press outfit in Glasgow. They have a book / zine store as well as a great website and an open submission policy. I have sold quite a few zines with them over the past years. They ask for a PDF or a sample zine and take a third of the selling price. Well worth supporting: https://goodpress.co.uk/

When I visited last year I think it was a combined zine/book fair, plus there was a Cafe Royal Books exhibition on at the time too with a bunch of speakers talking about self-publishing, plus talks from Craig Anderson (Cafe Royal's founder) and photographer, Daniel Meadows. Despite my pathetic zine sales It was a really good day.

I posted about it on my blog.

I'm in too - I've sent a message via conversations if that is the PM route.

Only 4 exchanges committed so far. Anyone else before the Friday deadline?

I'm not going to participate - sorry. Although I have the images for another, I have not yet curated them down to zine level, nor assembled the zine.

The list of zine exchanges #10 (5 x in total this time round) has now been sent out to each participant.

All zines posted off today.
